Subject: question about sleep
we all know that sleep is when our bodies recover.

how about when we lay down in a vegetative state and are watching tv/computer etc. are we recovering now? this counts as rest right?

silly, but I've always wondered. thinking even more as i watch the live ironman feed.

I've done a lot of reading on this.  In short, the answer is 'yes and no'.  Yes, any relaxation will encourage recovery.  But vegetating in from of the TV is not the same as sleep.  Your body does different things when it is truly asleep.  Things that not even a rerun of 'Family Ties' can induce...

yeah but since those reruns are sleep inducing they in turn lead to recovery
