How many of you have a seperate bank account or certain budgeted amount put aside each pay-day for all your triathlon expenses?

Or do you just splash out whenever you need stuff?

It can definitely be an expensive sport if you get all the bells and whistles. Personally, I take care of the family first. If my wife wants a perm and I want a new HR monitor - the wife wins everytime (and that's the way I want it). Tri's will always be there, but time and money spent on the family to make them happy is priceless. So, to answer your question...no on the separate bank account.

Yes, I call it my "New Bike Fund." But no, I don't take maney off my kid's plates or college fund, or even my wife's hairdo budget. What I do is deposit "extra" monies that i earn outside my regular job (director's fees, officiating, etc.), plus whenever anyone can't think of something to buy me for Christmas, birthday, Father's day, Groundhof Day, they know a contribution to NBF is always welcome.

I can provide you with information if you would like to contribute.

Regardless, it gives me guilt-free money to make my major tri purchases.

I have my own checking account (as does my husband), and I have a joint account. We each put a certain amount of $ into the joint account every month, and from there we pay all the bills and household expenses. I use the money in my personal account for my tri stuff, and everything else "for me"-- e.g. haircuts, clothing, books, hobbies, travel, etc.

My wife and I both have separate accounts in which we deposit a small amount each week for personal use (and also other accounts for family stuff/taxes/home maintenance/emergencies/etc.).  My triathlon spending comes out of my weekly personal account, always spent with a debit card so I can't spend more than I have.

I'm fairly sure that by the end of the year I'll have overspent my planned budget for triathlon stuff, which simply means I'll end up spending less on other personal stuff (clothes, lunch, gas, haircuts, etc.).
