Subject: Springfield OWS
Hello.....I am new to the site and training for the Stoneman Sprint and Stovepipe Sprint and while I am extremely comfortable in the water I have yet to practice an OWS and would really like to get at least one in before my first event in 5 weeks.

Is there anyone in this area that is doing either of these events and where have you practiced?  Would love to find a group of people to practice OWS with.

I am just a second year triathlete and I will be doing the stoneman this year again, (first time was last year)

I, too, need to find an open water swim location.  I recently moved to Mahomet and all I know clinton lake has a beach and I paid the $1 to swim there this past weekend, but besides that the other lakes around Decatur/champaign area you cannot swim in.

Lake shelbyville?  Can you still swim in springfield in that little area by the start of the tri or is that banned?

One place you can go is the Lake Springfield beach and swim along the sea wall at the very back.  It would be a good spot to practice your siting.  It's free and there are lifeguards on duty.  It's actually where packet pickup for the Stoneman/Iron Abe races are held.  Not sure of the hours...

I don't think swimming at the boat launch where the tri is actually held is allowed since it's very busy on the weekends with boats.

Editing my own post to add that I am doing both the Stoneman and the Stovepipe this year, and I live in Springfield, so if you are looking for someone to train with, let me know!

Thank you both.  I actually went to the Beach House on Sunday and it was closed for some reason.  I do hope it isn't due to the water quality but I don't know.  I need to get on CWLP's website and check their hours.

I can honestly say I would very much enjoy training with someone, however, with a 2 year old and a husband I find it hard to keep a set schedule.  I get my training in when I can but sometimes, like today, I found myself running at 5:00 AM.  Maybe we can work something out. =)

Wasn't it hot out there?  I ran at 5:00 AM also and was surprised how muggy the air felt.

That's disappointing about the beach. I wonder if all the storms are affecting the water quality.  If I hear of any OWS I will be sure to let you know!

I have tried late at night and the last couple of mornings and it is so hard to breathe.  Running is by far my weakest event so I keep on going but sometimes with the humidity it feels self-defeating.

Just an FYI, I checked CWLP's site and apparently they always keep the beach closed after heavy rains until they can assess the water quality.  I may have to take a couple of mornings off of work to go get some time in.

OK, that makes sense.   I guess the rain washes a lot of crud into the water.

It’s actually because of bacteria... Sometimes after it rains the bacteria count in the lake gets really high.
