Subject: Worse NoVa Trail?
I am a huge fan of all the trails in this area. Many drivers are crazy and some roads are just real tough to ride on unless you get out nice and early, so having a nice trail system is great. I road into work yesterday and spent a good amt. of time on the Custis Trail. I spend more of my trail rides out in herndon->ashburn area, but when I ride into work and a few other times I have come east and hit the Custis and Mt Vernon. Sorry for giving too much info.

Does anyone else dread the Custis Trail the way I do?

My ride in is about 22 miles, with more on Annandale Rd, Gallows and some on 50. Once I get on the WO&D, all I can think about is great, here comes bumpy hilly Custis. Hills don't bother me all that much (maybe a little, cause I need more riding time), but when I get half way down some of those hills and to the bottom and everything on my bike is shaking and rattling, I just hope I make it out and get to the WO&D soon. Should I just appreciate that I am not down on 66 and suck it up?

I was talking to a friend the other day about this trail - and this person is a GOOD cyclist, so it's not like this is just my own wussy opinion. Yes, that trail is not very well maintained and has a lot of cracks and roots growing through it, etc. And when you add those metal walls that really narrow out parts of the trail, esp. the turns, it feels a little hairy... It wouldn't be nearly as bad if they repaved it. That would help a lot. The intial section that branches off from the W&OD isn't bad, but the stretch along 66 is a bit rough.

Yeah that's how I get to pretty much every other trail.  The section from the Quincy road intersection to where the trail intersects with 29 for the second time, down closer to Rosslyn (it intersects with 29 2x around there) is the worst part of any trail in this area that I have found.  Broken path, metal plates on the path, standing water, mud, etc.

maybe that's why there was a group of road bikers riding slower than me the other week when I was on there, hehe.  I'm used to riding on the CCT though when I'm not riding single track, which is minimally paved so Custis was really fast for me.  Maybe they just want to keep you guys within the speed limit, lol.
