I'm a newbie to the tri scene....OWS coach just informed us that we will be swimming in Lake Wingra tonight.  Skipped Tuesday well because it was just too hot to get into my wetsuit.  I guess it was a good excuse but did a 12 mile TT on the bike instead ---so not all was lost.

So, if you were scheduled to swim tonight in Lake Wingra would you go knowing the conditions are hot, weedy and stinky.
Would you wear a wetsuit?

TIA.

There are a few other threads in the Wisconsin forum on this topic, so you might want to take a look at them. Personally I would swim in it, but I like to go out deep where there aren't any weeds. If I were staying in the shallows, the weeds would annoy me too much.

I swam there on Tuesday without a wetsuit, but I haven't seen the lake since then. It could have gotten nastier in the last couple days. I would recommend a wetsuit just because if you run into a patch of weeds that comes all the way to the surface it will tangle you up pretty good. On the other hand, it would be really hot in a wetsuit right now. I was warm on Tuesday even without a suit. So that's your choice--overheating or getting drowned by weeds.

I won't be at my OWS class tonight due to another commitment, but they are ALL swimming in Wingra.  I was there on Tuesday night and my biggest issue was the heat.  The water is probably 84F by now and I roasted in my wetsuit when it was 82F.  When I got out of the water my hands were bloated!  The weeds are a total gross out at the shoreline and all the way past the buoy line. I floated on my back to get through them.  Once you get in the middle it is fine, but you probably won't last more than 45 minutes due to the heat.

Curious, who did you swim with? Jessica?

If the water is 84, I would definitely go without the wetsuit, that is just too hot for a suit.  I don't think I would use if it is over 75 or so.  Yes it makes me a little faster, but only until I burn up in it.

Swam in Wingra...it wasn't that bad. The weeds are getting thick and it was warm,  but no algae like the other lakes.  It didn't smell tonight either.

Suzy - I am in Mark's class....but haven't been there when you've been there. Sounds like there was a mix up tonight and Mark wasn't there. Most of us met at Wingra and some people met at Picnic Point.  Mark was at Picnic Point.  The "swimmer" swimmers swam across the lake and back, and a group of us just swam to the middle and back.  Off topic - your husband used to me my boss.  Tell him Amy from marketing at Berbee says hi.  He was a great boss and a good person too.  My husband and I got married in Kauai and had our wedding dinner at The Beach House.  Got lots of great advice before we went.

What a small world.  I totally remember your wedding planning.  Paul's coming back from Amsterdam tomorrow. I will tell him you said hello.

Did you just start Mark's class?  I will be there on Tuesday for sure so introduce yourself. Sounds like we are at Picnic Point from now on.  When's your first event?
