New user![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey... I'm a first time triathlete and am all trained up and ready to go in August. Here's my problem - I'm unsure what type of gear I need for this event. I've never done a triathlon and the transitions have me freaked out. Since this is a pool swim in August, I shouldn't need a wetsuit - But gimme the basics - Do I wear a regular suit and then throw clothes on over it for the bike and run? Is there a special type of swim suit that I should wear? Can somebody describe the transitions in detail for me? I apologize for my ignorance. Any help would be great! -Emily |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm assuming it's Alligator Creek? No, no wet suit. It's usually a serpentine swim...you go down one and up the other (so practise lane changes if you can). You swim in your bike shorts so try to have tri shorts so the pads aren't huge and soak up the water. AFter the swim you run up the stairs to the parking lot which is the transition area. There you put on your helmet and bike stuff and go. The bike course if fairly flat, although it does have some hills. You go back to the transistion area, rack your bike (in the same spot) and change into your running gear, also not forgetting your number. The run is in the neighborhood by the park but it is very hilly...you start with a huge hill and it's never really flat. It's a really good race...good for 1st timers yet a challange for experienced. I'm hoping to do it again. Post race activities are good--good food and door prizes. There's a a couple playgrounds nearby for the kiddos too. |

New user ![]() | ![]() I'm planning on doing this race, did it last year. It's great. You start one at a time (every 10-15 seconds) then swim in a pool (wear tri shorts). Get out on the other side and run up the sidewalk to the transition area, and go from there. Good first race. It is very hilly. I would suggest riding and running the course a few times to see how you body will do. Have a great time, |

Member![]() ![]() | ![]() In addition to what has already been said, I found no socks on the bike to be easier and suprisingly comfortable. So, all I had to remember was to find my bike coming out of the pool and put on my helmet (which i left on my bike seat as a reminder). From the bike to the run, I just laid out my running shoes and socks (stuffed in shoes) on the ground in my transistion area. I couldn't run without socks. Good luck and have fun! Ryan |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Nothing more to add really except to say Good Luck! I'll being there too - my first time for this one but my second tri. I drove the bike course one day (or at least as much as I could tell from the not-very-good map I had) and there seemed to be a lot of rolling hills but only 1 or 2 that I thought might be a problem for me. I think I'll be OK though as long as I get some hill work in before. Oh, and the run course - lots of hills! I've volunteered at this tri for 2 years and that always seemed to be the one thing that I heard a lot of people talk about. So be ready for that. Janet |

From past race reports that I've read, yeah, people have had to wait for trains at times. Not really a concern for me since I'll be at the back and probably need the rest by then, lol, but for the people towards the front (going for awards) it seems to be an issue, at least for some of them. |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() This will be my first of many triathlons, at least I hope...I've fallen in love with all the training and the bricks. I started out just getting in shape and dropped 30 pounds and figured I wanted a goal. Since I workout at Renaud I figured alligator creek triathlon sounds like a winner. I've been training in general for about 4 months but really hardcore training for about 9 weeks now. I have biked the 18 mile course 3 times. I find the best time to go is @ 5am on saturday morning. Not a single car has ever gone the same direction as me until that last stretch on the service road back...and even then it was no more than 5 cars total. Edited by justified 2009-07-19 11:13 PM |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Oh yeah, trains. I have heard them but have never had them in front of me on early saturday morning. I looked on the net to see if there was a train schedule around but couldn't find any. I may go to that train 'house' there by the track, close to alligator creek, and see if i can get some info. Supposedly there is a guy there by 6am in the mornings during the week, I think. If anyone has any info about the trains, that would be a big help. The only place i see the train cross is during the bike course and it is in two places....Elaine Drive(about halfway), and Hancock Drive(right before you turn on mexico/service road to head back). |
