Wear out pedals?

Champion  19812     MA |  Subject: Wear out pedals?My ultegra pedals have about 11-12K miles on them. I unclip left when I have to while riding so it gets more use than right but in general I coast, slow down and don't unclip much while riding. My pedal has started to feel strange not crisp and at time hard time unclipping. I replaced my cleats last week thinking that might be the issue. No improvement and my other pair of bike shoes similar feeling on the same pedals. Could I have worn out the pedal? Is there anything else I can do to try and fix the problem. |

Extreme Veteran 575 Concord, NH | Subject: RE: Wear out pedals? Try dropping a little oil on the contact area of the pedal, like Phil Woods Tenacious Oil, and see if that helps. Pedals do wear out, but I would think you can still get life our of them. I had a pair of Ritchey mtn bike pedals that were also used for cyclocross for 6 years. Sure they did not have as high of mileage on them, but the beating they took from off road use was far greater than anything a road pedal would see. I did lube them often with oil or WD-40. |

Master 1963 | Subject: RE: Wear out pedals? Do those pedals have a "tension adjustment screw" on them. It's possible one's gotten looser than the other. You might try tightening that up. Long term probably going to need some pedals  |

This past weekend I replaced a pair of LOOK pedals from 1997 with about 13,000 miles on them with a new pair of LOOK Keo sprint, and it made a huge difference. I had the old ones adjusted as tight as they would go and was almost sliding out of them. |

They are metal ultegra pedals I bought in '06. I was riding the trainer today and couldn't get my left foot out of the pedal. I had to unclip other foot get off my bike and really jerk at it. It need to get better as it could be dangerous if I can't unclip. I have 2 other sets of pedals I can use but they are the low end 105 type. |

Extreme Veteran 349 Burke, VA | Subject: RE: Wear out pedals? Ultegra pedals do have the tension adjustment. Trying turning that adjustment screw counterclockwise to loosen and see if that helps. May have just tightened over time from vibration. |

The LBS took them apart and got them replaced under warranty for me. They felt it was a workmanship problem. I would take them in to the LBS to see if they can help you determine the problem. I would say that after 10K they don't really owe you anything. Kevin |

I have worn on black plastic piece totally in one corner and have worn away a good chunk of metal on outside part of pedal. They had never seen a road pedal worn like mine. I keep wearing out parts on my bike need new bar end shifters too. Thing that annoys me the pedal probably could have been saved if when I brought it in for tune up they noticed the plastic peice had worn and replaced the cheapy part before it wore into the metal. I get two tune ups a year but I'm in the process of learning to do more of the work myself. They replaced the black plastic piece but I think it is time for new pedals. Are Dura Ace worth 20 grams each for $100 more? |

I found the old style Dura Ace with the black plastic piece similar to the Ultegra ones I wore out. The new style has metal piece that probably will hold up better and is replaceable as well. I'll keep looking but my gut says get the new style without the plastic peice. |

They look a little wider now, but it doesn't seem like I have any less cornering clearance. The plastic piece is a PITA. I've worn through and replaced mine at least 5 times (granted, I had them on multiple bikes). |
