I finished my first tri this am. I' m 60, have been able to swim since 5. The bike and run went as expected.  But the swim surprised me.  I expected about 16 min, not fast but frestyle all the way. The water was great; I warmed up swimming a good stroke, good breathing rhythm. I hung back to avoid the churn.  Actually breast stroke to keep watch.  When I rounded the first buoy, about 50 yards out I started to freestyle but could not breathe.  I had to stay on my back.  I couldn't even breast stroke.  I felt like I was going to drown at any minute for the 500 yards. Was this just a panic attack of some sort?

Read the thread titles today closely. There are at least three with something akin to "OWS, what the heck happened?"

It's not all that uncommon to have some degree of discomfort for your first OWS or first in a long time. All the way from "Damn, I was about to hyperventilate and had to breathe every stroke" to "I hung on the kayak for dear life and the guy paddled back into shore with my pretending to be a barnacle."

OWS more and see if that helps.
