THE BOUNTY OF THE COUNTY – SUNDAY JULY 12th

Our local community has always considered our neck of the woods as “the hidden gem of southern Ontario”. It’s time to show the city slickers what makes the county so unique!

Please join us for a day of FITNESS, FOOD, FRIENDS, & FUN!!! Through the course of this day we’ll motivate one another with some great group exercise and activities, eat locally grown and prepared foods at a historical site only minutes away, support two wonderful local causes, and spend the day with like-minded people who are proud of where they live and come from. Festivities will last from 8:00am – 7:00pm, but feel free to join in at any time. Please note: this is a family friendly event, and, while the email addresses of those invited have been undisclosed for privacy purposes, they include Loaring Physiotherapy staff, LPC clients, cycling/running/triathlon training partners, business associates, family friends, and neighbours from our community.

Event Headquarters: Loaring Cottage (site of the Loaring Triathlon), 881 County Rd 50 E. Ample parking onsite. Directions here: http://www.loaring.com/loaring/directions.htm

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS – SUNDAY JULY 12th

8:00am – Group Open Water Swim (Loaring Beach, Lake Erie). All abilities welcome. Wetsuits optional (the water is warm!). Please arrive EARLY and be ready to start the swim promptly at 8am.

9:15am – Group Bike Ride. Helmets mandatory. Maps and routes provided. All abilities welcome. We will start together promptly at 9:15am, and then break off according to ability. No one will get left behind. Along the way you will pass many local farms, wineries, and businesses. Riders who wish to ride longer may: a) start their bike earlier and then meet back at Loaring Cottage for the 9:15am group start, OR, b) continue to ride after we complete the group ride at approximately 11:15am.

11:30am – Group Run/Walk to “Elena’s Way”. This fun 3-5km group event leads you along the lake via quiet county roads up to the most beautiful path in the area – “Elena’s Way” (affectionately named so by our family in memory of a very special woman). Elena Loaring lost her battle to breast cancer in 2004. This group walk/run will be in support of the local Dragon Boat Races for Breast Cancer held the same day. A small donation of your choice will be collected at the start of the run/walk for this worthy cause and donated on your behalf. All participants are encouraged to wear a pink clothing item or accessory. (Note: Lake, outdoor hose, or quick indoor showers available for clean-up before lunch.)

12:30pm – Locavore Lunch at John R Park Homestead Conservation Area (915 County Rd 50 E). This event, sponsored by the Essex Region Conservation Authority (www.erca.org), showcases the bounty of food items from local farmers and growers, and is hosted at the historic lakeside property less than 400m from the Loaring Cottage. Together, we will walk over and enjoy a sit-down lunch with live music in a beautiful and historic setting. What’s more, you can actually meet local farmers and producers and learn about their products and methods (remember - we are what we eat!).

Lunch tickets MUST be purchased in advance, and space is limited. Last year’s event SOLD OUT ahead of time. Please purchase your advance tickets by calling 519-738-2029 or emailing [email protected] At the time of ticket purchase please let them know you are part of the “Loaring Group”.

This year’s menu will include home-grown ingredients such as lamb, honey, cheese, wine, pancakes, maple syrup, strawberry crepes, other seasonal fruits, grilled portobello mushrooms, sausage, and fresh bread. Tickets are $20 per person.

2009 marks 200 years of agriculture in this area, and John R Park Homestead is Ontario’s only living historical farm museum west of London. Thanks to ERCA and their related charitable foundation, the Essex Region Conservation Foundation (ERCF), our community has a chance to enjoy this site and other local natural resources such as Lasalle Woods, The Chrysler Canada Greenway, Cedar Creek, Heritage Forests, Holiday Beach, the Kingsville Train Station, and more. To learn more about ERCF, please visit their website at www.ourgreenlegacy.org

For those who are unable to attend the Locavore Lunch, you are welcome to bring a bag or BBQ lunch to the Loaring Cottage and wait for our return at approximately 1:45pm.

2:30pm – War Canoe Maiden Voyage of 2009 Season. Again, in honour of the Dragon Boat Races and breast cancer, a small donation of your choice gets you a paddle and a seat in “Poseidon”, the Loaring War Canoe. Kid-sized paddles and life-jackets are available. Singing and laughter is encouraged!

Other activities: Swimming, kayaking, trampoline, soccer, picnic table crafts centre, sand castle building, and lounging.

We will provide: Fridge and cooler space, tables, chairs, plates, napkins, utensils, cups, condiments, BBQ and tools.

What to Bring:

1. Activity attire/equipment.

2. Pink clothing item or accessory.

3. Bathing suit, towel, sunscreen.

4. Donations of your choice for the Dragon Boat Races.

5. Food and drinks for the afternoon. (A small appetizer or pot luck item is suggested.)

Reminder: While there is no need to RSVP for any of the activities at the Loaring cottage, if you wish to attend the Locavore Lunch you must purchase your own tickets IN ADVANCE (and I suggest doing that ASAP as they sell out quickly – remember to tell them you are with the “Loaring Group”). We will have a huge table reserved at the event under “Loaring”. Again, you may park in our driveway for the entirety of the day and simply walk over to the lunch event.

Rain Plan: In the event of heavy rain or lightning storms, the swim and bike portion of the day will be cancelled. The run/walk, lunch, and afternoon festivities will take place rain or shine. There is no better location to view a summer storm then our covered back patio overlooking Lake Erie.

Any questions should be directed to Charlotte via email ([email protected]) or cell (519-257-3762). We hope you are able to join us for this exciting day, and help us support two causes and a local community that we are extremely passionate and proud of.
