Subject: What would you do?

Ok, I have my first half on July 11th. One week ago I was in the pool for a long slow workout. I was about 2000 meters into my swim when my right shoulder started to hurt. It has just gotten worse since then. I can only swim about 800 meters before I have to stop. Going to the doctor on Tuesday.

I am really thinking about doing the breast stroke (not sure if that will even work) for the swim portion of the race but I also know that due to injury the Muncie Endurathon will allow you to roll over you entry to the next year.

I am just wondering what everyone else would do. Would you go ahead and swim it or just wait until next year?

I'd see what the Doc had to say about it before making that decision. You're into the peak and taper point so not swimming or not that much isn't going to make or break your day. If Doc says don't, then don't.

I'd see what the Doc said.

If there isn't a serious problem you may just need a more extreme taper in your swimming.

See what your doc says, and give it a rest until race day. If you're swimming 2000+ m. at a pop now, you're more than trained. 12 days won't make or break you. You may feel a bit sluggish, but otherwise fine (assuming yoru arm is healed).

I am so TICKED OFF!!

Just back from the doctor and he believes that I have torn a tendon in my shoulder and should not race. He believes that if I do race I may injure my shoulder more. I am going for an MPI on Thursday just to see.

I have been training my A$$ off to do this race. I am 40 the best shape of my life and then BOOM cant race. What a crock.

Do a relay. Have someone swim for you, then bike and run.

pleanty of time to race... rest the shoulder, do not risk doing more damage... sign up for a half later in the season

A tendon? Or a ligament? Big difference.

If it's a tendon, then I'd definitely lean on the side of doing a relay or not participating. Tendons anchor your muscles to the bone, and a tendon tear that you keep using can turn into a full rupture, and those are definitely not fun to rehab.

If it's a ligament (Which is very likely in a shoulder, my first instinct when I read your post was that you separated your shoulder some), then you may be able to race on it. Depends on if they think it needs surgery. If you have to have surgery to fix the ligament, you might as well race. If not, then see the recommendations for tendon.

Really sucks, hope it's something minor!
