Subject: Bike leg on potholed roads

I know that I am supposed to travel right and pass on the left during the bike leg of the tri. I'm also not supposed to cross the double yellow line on the course.

What are the rules/etiquette for roads with excessive rough patches? I have been training on the course and I just take the best line that I can through, but often that pushes me left. The particular 2 mile section is on easy rolling hills, the kind where I can push 27+ on the slight down and just carry the momentum over the ups. It would be a shame to have to ride through it slowly on race day. Based on my training splits I expect to be MOP/BOP out of the water but in the top 1/3 on the bike which means lots of passing.

I don't want to be penalized but I also want to remain safe while riding. Any advice?

If you plan on being a "passer" then  you probably don't have to worry about it.

We had that problem at Escape from Alcatraz.  HORRIBLE pot-holed road for a good chunk of the bike.  I just tried to stay as far right as possible while avoiding major obstacles.

I got passed on the right once...but I wasn't even very far to the left so I thought that was odd.

I would say to try to stay to the right if you can, but definitely move left if you need to avoid obstacles.
