I see on the NY Parks and Rec site they hold adult lap swim at a number of the outdoor public pools in the city from 7-8:30am starting July 6th. Has anyone ever gone? Crowded? What do you think?

Also- if you swim in the city, where? Feedback on these places?

Thanks.

I swim at Manhattan Plaza Health Club and really like it.  It's rarely crowded, not many kids, full 25 yards, and has a retractable roof, so is partially outside on nice days.  The club is not fancy, but it's also not expensive.  There's a swim program which I've thought about checking out, with a coach and everything.  If the far west side works for you, I'd certainly recommend MPHC.

I swam at John Jay Pool (I believe it's 77th btw York & FDR) a few times last summer.  They have lap swim in the morning and evening.  I thought it was a pretty decent pool.  There were a fair number of people there but it wasn't overly crowded.

I currently swim at Asphalt Green, and I love it!  I tend to swim in the early AM and most mornings the full 50 meters is open.  It's defintely not the most inexpensive of pool options, and it's on the far east side, so if you don't live in the neighborhood it can be a hike to get there.  But it works well for me and I really like it.

I swim at these 2 YMCAs
McBurney YMCA - 125 West 14th St. - New York, NY 10011 - (212) 912-2300
Vanderbilt YMCA - 224 East 47th St. - New York, NY 10017 - (212) 912-2500

Both nice, and the Vandy has 2 pools (one for aqua-exercise, etc) so there are always 6 lanes for lap swim open.

I haven't tried Lasker in the AM, but I may check it out. During the day it has 10,000 kids in in.

Riverbank State Park has an outdoor pool, but it's way uptown on the hudson river http://nysparks.state.ny.us/parks/docs/RiverbankSummerAquaticComple...

And lastly, this website has basically every pool in the city

I sometimes swim at the Chinatown YMCA, 270 Bowery. They charge $15 for a day pass. The pool is nice but I find that it gets crowded in the evenings with classes so sometimes there are only one or two lanes open for lap swimming.

Do the other Y's allow you to pay a daily fee to swim?
