I am brand new to Tri's and i have my first one in august. When i train in the pool i am able to do 50 meters until i feel like i am going to die.. I am following the 13 week sprint 3x balanced program and it says to swim for 17 minutes, my question is do i doggie paddle, breast stroke or whatever it takes to get me to 17 mins or do i stop when needed take 30 second break then do another 50 meters ?? I know i cannot stop during the race but to get me to the race what is the best way to train ? I am just looking to finish the race..I am in the process of getting a coach to help me along. Thanks !!

Train like you race, race like you train.

If you can't swim for 17 minutes... then don't doggie paddle to do so.

Good luck!

Look at the following plan.  This is what I used for my first sprint tri.  What I liked about it is the detail it gave me in resting time and planning each swim, run and bike (as do most plans).  If I were doing a full sprint I would have up'd the yardage respectively, but I did a Tri-It Sprint for my first one.  Right now I have moved to a plan that prepares me for a full sprint,  but want to feel comfortable with my swim so I will again particiate in another Tri-It Sprint (1/4 mile swim instead of 1/2 mile) with the bike and run being equal to a full sprint.

Do what it takes to finish the required distance; as you will most likely have to do this in your race.  I ended up doing the side stroke for a little bit to rest my arms as they felt like lead weights during my swim.

Good Luck.  Keep Tri-ing.

I would recommend doing 25 - 50 yds (or meters) at a time and take 10 - 20 sec rest  and repeat until you get to the 17 minutes.  Build up the time in the water.  Once you get comfortable bump up each repeat by a length of the pool until you can swim steady for the required time.  Just killing yourself doing "resting" strokes will just be frusterating.

You have time, just keep up the good work.  Time in the water is important to getting comfortable.

Keep at it, you'll find the more you swim the more you build up both endurance and speed.  from your training logs it looks like you just started swimming in June.  I started in April and after the first 6 weeks or so I found myself making big leaps forward.  There's alot of good information here too.   I'm also following the 3x beginner sprint program.  I use swimplan.com to come up with my workouts and vary according to how long I'm supposed to be swimming that day.

Thanks for all the help, man swimming is alot tougher than i ever thought !!!Laughing  I get anxious because the sprint i am doing has a 1023 yard swim which will be the longest i ever swam but i keep at it and keep getting in the pool and it does seem to get better every few weeks.
