I will be doing the Federal escape tri as my first in a few weeks.  Do I need a wetsuit.  I am reasonably tolerant of cold water.  It is only a 440 yard swim, and was hoping to go without.   have read the race reports, but am unable to tell who used suits.

I am doing this. I did it a couple of years ago without a wetsuit and you're right, for such a short swim you probably won't need one.

Are you doing the sprint or the oly?  I'm registered for the Oly but I might change that.

It was my very first tri two years ago, and I didn't have a wetsuit (I don't think I even knew what a wetsuit was at that point).....definitely no problem without.  I raced there a couple of weeks ago and the lake temp was around 72, I think, very comfortable.  Be prepared for strange water, though.  It's peat-fed, so very dark, like swimming in strong coffee.  It can freak you out a bit if you don't expect it!  Trifreaks are really nice people and put on a great race.  If I recall, they had pancakes and sausages afterward, which were soooo good!

If I happen across a comp entry, I'll do it, too.

The sprint.  Mainly because of the short swim.

Thank you two for the reply.  I will be the pasty white overweight guy, that looks lost.  Say hello.

In fact, Lynne and I were both there doing our first tri.  We'd met for one swim before that but since then have done about a zillion races together, and lots of socializing!    Also met my friend Liz there, amongst others.  I will bet there ends up being a lot of BTers!

Hey folk, I'm hoping to do this race as well.  I'm not registered yet...It will depend on whether I have 70 bucks left after my rent and car insurance have come out of my next paycheck.

If I am there...

I am petite and will be wearing my light blue tri top and black tri shorts.  I will be doing the sprint.
