Subject: Acupuncture - What do you think?
Anyone successfully using acupuncture for chronic pain/injuries? I'm considering it for my shoulder. After breaking it last year I have developed a series of trigger points in my neck and have knots all around my scapula, none of which have responded to massage therapy. The ortho said they could be injected, but I'd rather try something less invasive first and worry about ART or Graston causing too much pain to keep training at a high volume. I'd love to know if acupuncture may be a good solution, if even an interim one.

K, as a medical treatment it was ineffective in solving my lower back issues. But in hindsight, my low back issues couldn't have been solved by accupuncture, only surgery was going to do the trick.

I do believe, though, that for certain injuries, it has the potential to help...I'd give it a go.  It is relatively low cost, and certainly low risk.  Plus, I found that medicinal qualities aside, the accupuncture sessions was an amazingly relaxing hour...so even if it doesn't work for the shoulder, it's similar IMHO to getting a deep tissue massage.  Very, very relaxing.

I was seeing an acupuncturist in SD on a regular basis.  It CAN help for many things.  I originally went hoping to get my knee fixed but just like rkreuser, only surgery was going to fix the knee.  But the acupuncturist helped me with a bunch of other stuff.  One time I had a muscle all in a knot...she put needles in it and they were sticking every which way.  Over the 30 minutes I sat there with the needles in they all straightened out into a nice line.  It was pretty cool to watch.  I am definitely a believer in Eastern medicine.

The way I see it, if you're hurting...just about anything is worth a try to stop the hurting.  Make sure you find a reputable acupuncturist though.  I would give it a good 6 or so sessions before giving up on it.

Good luck.

How do you find a really reputable one, aside from a direct referral?
