Hey everyone,

I have a sprint tri coming up in less then a month, and the run is a 4 mile beach run.  Do people typically wear shoes for these?

We don't have beaches around here, but I just wanted to say, "Ouch!" I can't imagine running with sand in my shoes. Maybe there is a packed dirt trail along the beach?

Yeah, should be interesting.  Note to self, read the fine print before signing up for a triathlon.

I'm planning on running on the packed end of the sand, near the water.  Just not sure if its better to go barefoot, or run with sneakers and hope they don't get waterlogged.

There are many barefoot runners on BT (myself included) and if you decide to go this route you definitely need to train for it. Removing all the support the running shoe gives you will really work your foot & leg muscles differently so it's something to be prepared for.

Most general barefoot running advice is to work up slowly so if you already can run 3-4 miles in shoes, you would still only do a mile or so on your 1st few barefoot runs (your strike & stride will naturally be changed which works your leg muscles much differently). Then you can work up from there dependent on how you feel. If you don't have a beach to train on [as many of us don't :] then running in grass is great so any local school/sports fields would be a good option.

Good luck & enjoy!

I don't run on the beach or in the sand.
Doesn't  wet feet + sand + shoes = pain  ??

Every time I have tried to run on sand, I have split the skin underneath my toes. It is extremely painful, and then you add salt water to it. I think you are correct in staying on the hard pack but you should definately wear shoes as well.

you might look into a water shoe for the run. a have a pair that i got at wally world (wal-mart) for like 10 bucks. I weould not run in them all the time but better support than nothing and they don't get excessivly water logged and heavy. that would be the biggest obstical for me. The packed end is the best way to go but the water adds additional obsticals in water weight as your shoes and socks get wet.

Thanks to everyone for their help.  Wish I could have replied sooner.  I think I'm going to go and buy some swim shoes and try a run on dry land to see how they hold up.  Hopefully that'll do the trick.

Thanks again

Here is the key to a triathlon w/ a beach run! First there is typically always soft sand you will need to run thru after leaving transition - LISTEN, THIS IS IMPORTANT.

DO NOT PUT YOUR SNEAKS ON IN TRANSITION!!!!!!!!!!

Once you have reached the packed sand is the best time to stop for 5 seconds and slide your sneaks on.
