Subject: Bike routes in Newport
I am coming up to spectate J/S RI70.3 this weekend. Plan on trying to get a 3 hourish ride on Saturday, probably in Newport as we are staying there on Saturday night (my job is to drive the car back to Providence during the race ).

I lived in Portsmouth RI ten years ago (but for only 6 months) so I am somewhat familiar with the area, but have no clue what roads are good to ride.

Any ideas?

Honestly.... if its a nice day out, avoid Newport for a training ride.  The traffic can be just horrendous.  I would try and go out early.  Getting a 3 hour long ride on the island can be tough.  Doing Jamestown is also nice (See attached file)

Let me know what hotel you are at and I can give you a route.  Basically do the following:
  1. Head south towards ocean drive...
  2. Follow the loop around till the corner of Bellevue and Memorial.
  3. Left on Memorial heading north towards the beaches
  4. Bear right at the ABC (Atlantic Beach Club)
  5. Bear right just past the surfers at second beach
  6. Head toward the point and loop around.
  7. Make a right onto Hanging Rock Road
  8. Follow Hanging Rock to Indian Ave to Old Mill La
  9. Left on Old Mill to Wapping Rd
  10. Right on Wapping Rd
  11. Follow Wapping Rd to Sandy Point Rd
  12. Optional:  Make a right onto Sandy Point and head to the beach and do hill repeats
  13. Head back down Wapping Rd until a stop sign at Wyatt Rd
  14. Left onto Wyatt Rd
  15. Left onto Berkely Ave
  16. Go straight at the intersection of Berkely and Green End
  17. Becomes Paradise Ave
  18. Follow Paradise Ave up Purgatory hill and back down past ABC
  19. Make left onto Memorial and back up to Bellevue
  20. Option:  Turn right and do Ocean Dr loop again.
Should end up being almost 40 miles depending on where your hotel is.  The route avoids the two really dangerous roads, East Main and West Main.

Awesome! Thanks! That is great, a route that avoids those busy roads. I remember them!

I think I want to try this island route, but maybe take a trip over the Mt Hope Bridge (saw it in some map-my-ride routes). Is this generally safe for bikers? I don't mind a real busy road for a short period.

Mt. Hope Bridge might be a rough go.  Not really a bike lane on it.  I'm not sure its legal to cross the island bridges on a bike.

I'm just paranoid on the road when I bike I guess.

There is a sidewalk on the bridge....just saying......

You might also check the Narragansett Bay Wheelman Club site HERE for maps and road info.  Rides from Little Compton hugging the coastline into Westport (part of their flattest century ride) are very nice too.
