Ok I am approximately 5 weeks out of my frist sprint.  I have not done any brick workouts yet but I am thinking about it.  How many should I do prior to my race?

How much should you practice transitions?  A few times so you know how to efficiently change and be ready for the next acitivity.  You can lose a lot of time in transition if you aren't 100% prepared to go through the activity.

How much should you brick?  Entirely up to you, but I wouldn't waste my precious training time personally.

My sprint is still about 7 weeks away, and I have done a couple bricks to get the feel.
Done a 20km bike followed by a 2.5km run,
Done a 20km bike followed by a full 5km,
and so on.  I do one right now about every 3rd week.  I dont know how effective it will be, but I am finding that I do them on a sunday, and still have a lot in the tank the rest of the week for the rest of the training I do.  Love to hear some elaboration on this too.

Since my family time is precious, I do most of my stuff in the AM as bricks, simply because I dont want to come home from work and then tell my fam I will see them in 2 hours cuz of a bike.  Regardless, I dont get how to brick or not to brick is ever the question.  If you keep the goals of each session in line with what is more important for the day and do then accordingly, its hardly a waste of time.  I know session quality is thrown around here a lot when these threads come up but I personally find that to be a bit bunk if one knows how to manage the workload which like it or not us mortal non-pros with jobs and kids are doing on a daily basis whether you split workouts or not from an energy standpoint.  Dunno why this topic is always seen as a black or white issue.

If you were to get a 2-3 in over the next 5 weeks you will be fine.  Keep in mind it doesn't need to be race pace, all you are wanting to do is find out what it is going to feel like running after coming off the bike and how long it will take your legs to wake up.

I do agree that you should practice transitions during these same workouts to give you a much needed relaxation affect come race day.

Didn't tell the OP "Don't do them."

Simply said that I wouldn't.  Family time is the reason I don't train as much as I would like.  Which means I want to get the absolute most out of the time I do have.  Hence the "precious training time" comment.

It's not at all black and white.  Nothing is in triathlon (except Cervelo paint schemes).  Which is why I said it is entirely up to them.  If they feel there is a benefit to do them then go for it.

since you are (or should) on your specific training phase this is the time bricks become more important; you could shoot to do them 1-2x week. Maybe alternate one week doing a shorter bike + longer run and the next a longer bike + a shoter run. That plus a race rehearsal and you should be good to go...
