There's a great lake by my house for open water swims (always some wind creating a steady chop) but I'm always nervous about going alone since there's no lifeguard and the canoe folks may or may not see me if I get into trouble.  Recently a teenager drowned out in the middle which is a terrible tragedy and has made me even more nervous.  Haven't been back since I heard about it.  This thing may solve that problem but hoping to see some reports on it's effectiveness and if it causes too much drag.

I haven't used one but I don't think the drag would be a major issue.  Peace of mind outweighs the bit of extra drag you may get.  I swam once with a guy who roped a kickboard to his leg and it didn't seem to bother him.

I have one, but thankfully have never had to deploy it.  It does give some peace of mind during OWS.  I can't tell if it creates any drag, but as a BOP swimmer, I suspect it is negligible.

Are you looking to race in it?

If not, who cares?

Extra drag means your training harder.
They even make special drag suits for people to practice in... and they don't offer the piece of mind of OWS water safety.

Good point about extra drag in training.  Hadn't even thought about that

Have one, have used a couple of times.  Never had to deploy it.  No issue with drag at all, it is very streamlined.  I like it so far.

A little off topic question about swim-safe.  I've seen a couple people have them on during a race, if you deploy it during a race, are you now DQ'd for having extra flotation?  What if you dont move forward, could that be like hanging on a kayak or buoy?  Would you then have to deflate it to move forward again b/c you cant take it off (abandoned equipment) or is this question moot because once you use it your done?

Again, I beleive that this is a life saving device and if there's a choice between drowning and getting DQ'd, I'll take the DQ.  Just curious.

If you deploy, I am pretty sure it would be a DQ. Nothing written down that I have seen though. BUT if you have had to deploy it, I would think that you might be drowning... and finishing the race would probably be the least of your worries.

I have used the Swim Safe and the drag is NOTHING. I'm a VERY PICKY swimmer when it comes to what is on me, etc. I notice stuff. This wasn't noticeable.

You get more drag if you put two swimsuits on (we did this in High School- had a bottom suit and a drag suit on top).

DQ or not may vary according to the race director.  I always ask them prior to wearing it in a race, but when I do, I always mention that it is with the understanding that I can be DQd if it is deployed.  I am willing to take that risk (of an unintentional deployment) for the peace of mind of having it on.  If it were to happen, the RD could DQ me or not at their discretion, but I understand that it is a likely consequence.

YMMV
