Does anybody take these after a workout ? Or, does anybody recommend taking them ? I know my son who plays football swears by them but he is young and trying to build muscle i want to lose weight but was curious if these were something good to use. Thanks

there's all kinds of clinical and research data out there disclosing the benefits.  It all depends on the conditions and your goals.  it is mainly used to replace the protein you might have used or damaged during your workout.

One of the companies with lots of real data is hammer (www.hammernutrition.com) they also offer literature thru your LBS or by mail.           Good luck!

After a long or hard workout, I drink some chocolate milk.  Effective and tastes great.

Hi, I think it's important to consume enough protein regardless your fitness goal are. There are two main benefits of consuming a high amount of protein that I can mention here.

First is for recovery. Your body is going on a catabolic (muscle break down) period during the workout, protein helps to prevent that by acting as anabolic (muscle builder) substance. Protein also helps you reducing the DOMS, which makes you able to train more. Second, protein helps you to control hunger during the diet. Protein needs longer time to be digest which gives you the "fullness" effect.

I would stick to the common rule of 1 gram of protein per pound of lean body mass, this is a safe base of consumption. In bodybuilding, our body weight fluctuate between seasons. A sufficient amount of protein consumption helps us to prevent muscle loss when we're dieting down.

The shakes in the other hands, provides an alternative source of protein since it's impossible to get that much of protein from the food alone. The one thing you need to check when going for protein shake is the BV content of it, a higher BV means it is faster to digest.
