Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Around here Birds Eye View charges about $20 for an 8X10. I have absolutely no interest in paying that much for a picture of me on a bike. For another race I did, a local photog did the shots and charged something like $5 for a 4X6. I got a couple of those. To me, charging $20 for a picture is ridiculous unless it is truly exceptional. And to me, you should charge less for a digital pic since there are no printing costs. So I guess you need to decide whether getting many small orders is better than fewer large orders. Also, WRT the idea of meeting someone and taking pics as they train, on trails, in TT setup, etc is really cool. I can see a lot of people doing that. Problem is the travel (for you or for them) unless you are in an area where there are a lot of triathletes. Actually, come to think of it, you could branch into many sports- cool swimming shots are hard to come by, for instance. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() i agree that for normal race stuff 20 for an 8x10 is a higher cost, and there are some poeple that think it should be nearly free because there is not a lot of costs to shoot. i need to meet somewhere on a middle ground though, so i can offer high quality work, at a reasonable rpice, make money here, and have people be happy with what they are getting. as to going out and sshooting with people, i live in boulder, so no shortage of athletes here. |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() GrilloOriginal - 2009-07-10 12:01 PM I would probably pay around $20 per shot for a couple great photos, but here's what I'd really be willing to fork out for: A package of roughly 15-20 photos, with pictures of the course, the crowd beforehand, any awards after and anything else special going on. Bonus points for sunrise photos before the race starts! And then 3 of me, one swim, one bike, one run (better if they're good, but sufficient if you can tell it's me). For a package like this I'd easily pay $50 even if the photos of me were sub par. If the photos of me were awesome, then it would be more like $75. x2 on this idea. A couple shots of pre-race / transition / crowds / course / post race and a few selected shots of me.... golden! and worth $50 or so... |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Personally I'd pay $5/pic to download some of the photos, not in high resolution of course. The prices that photographers charge right now are just ridiculous and therefore I haven't bought any. I figured they'd get more money out of people if they kept the expensive "high-quality" options while adding some low res downloadable pics for a cheaper price. |

New user![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() This would be something that is relatively easy to do but adds enough value that I think people would be willing to pay for it. Taking the extra photos would take very little additional effort, and creating the book for them also wouldn't be too much more work since you could basically use the same book for everyone, or at least the same book for each race or wave. Bring samples of the books and set up a table and you could probably take pre-orders that day, especially if you can show the participant their photos on the laptop and let them pick the photos they want. As for taking photos of just some of the participants, I think it would be very hard to sell those. If 5% of people buy photos, and you only take photos of 5% of the people, you are down to 2.5 photos sold per 1000 participants. Now there might be a market for people who want THEIR Triathlon documented, but i can't imagine it's too many people. |

I hear you, but unlike a team sport, that is a VERY VERY hard thing to do with one person. i for one know i would not go find a photog the day of a race, sign up, etc, and then expect photos of me. people are wearing all diff sorts of clothes, coming out at all diff times, going to be at diff places on the course at the same time as someone else you need to be shooting, etc. I am shooting by myself right now, having two or three other people would make that doable. I get can photos of most of the people racing at one point or another on the course, but there is no way i would be able to promise i would get a number of a certain person ahead of time, i have NO idea what they are going to look like in race gear, etc. its a good idea, but i;m not sure how practical it is yet? thanks! |

I'd probably be in the market even for that because I can count on my friends/family to at least get a photo of me at the finish line, but there's too much to do and see to document the whole race. It would be nice to have more than 1 photo to commemorate a big event. |

Regular![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Here is a photo of me on my motorcycle at Deal's Gap which is a very popular motorcycle destination (very curvy road). I paid $7 for this picture and I have bought atleast a picture per trip. It's 1280x853 http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2071/2528752067_9682bdf85f_o.jpg If I had a good SLR camera I'd for sure take pictures of races. I love taking pictures but I don't have $500-1000 to spend on a camera. Edited by ATLsbr 2009-07-10 4:31 PM |
