Total Time = 3h 49m
Overall Rank = 1288/1700
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 143/
Event warmup:

Swam around and made sure my gear was all on comfortably. There was a huge line of cars coming into the parking area and a long wait which made my early departure time disappear... I didn't have time to run or ride.
Swim
  • 45m 3s
  • 1500 meters
  • 03m / 100 meters
Comments:

Swim was tough. Longest swim since 2007 was 750m in last race. This is the no training "training plan". I was comfortable in the water, but swam way off course the first buoy as it was directly into the sun. I swam too wide on the 2nd and 3rd buoy. I estimate 200-300 extra meters! I was perfectly comfortable until I got out of the water. Drafting did not seem to work as I seemed to keep following people that were zig zagging
What would you do differently?:

Do swim training!
Transition 1
  • 03m 32s
Comments:

I got a bad cramp in my left quad as I ran towards my bike. I had my girl throw me a bottle of Advil over the fence, sat down, took off my suit, took the Advil then put on my shoes and tried to rub out the cramp. I sat for at least two minutes.
What would you do differently?:

everything!
Bike
  • 1h 33m 22s
  • 26.1 miles
  • 16.77 mile/hr
Comments:

I was weak leaving transition with the leg cramp and thought I miht have to drop out. I thought it was worth spinning and seeing if I could get my leg cramp to subside. I was very slow approaching O.S. and was in gear 1 on the hill approach....very weak... I slowly climbed the hill and swore I would not give up as i watched others do...I was rewarded at the end by a big fast swooping downhill! That was fun. I was good until mike ten, then my lower back got sore. I needed to gear down and not press as hard the rest of the way. I tried to keep a high cadence and push as well as I could. I felt moderately fast on the straights.

What would you do differently?:

Just be stronger. Not a good ride considering my climbing ability. Normally I can just hammer it up a hill even like Old Stage.
Transition 2
  • 01m 51s
Comments:

Entered T2 FAST... had a far walk to my Wave (racking area), then the bike next to my spot had fallen onto my stuff. I had to pick up the bike with one hand, put it back and then rack my bike...what a boondoggle!
What would you do differently?:

More energy =faster.
Run
  • 1h 25m 22s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 13m 45s  min/mile
Comments:

This was the part I wasn't sure I would do or not. I jogged slowly out of T2 and got cramps within 1/2 a mile! I was cursing. I then proceeded to try to run 2 minutes walk 1 and that failed. I hobbled along until mile 3 then I ran intermittently bacl to the finish. I was able to run the last 1.5 miles almost continuously. This was reminiscent of Buffalo Creek where I could not jog, only walk slowly or run at a fast pace. I used the Bobby McGhee technique, leaning forward and pumping my arms, keeping turnover high. I felt good and concentrated on this for the last mile.
What would you do differently?:

Brick workouts. Run training.

Because of two disc issues and plantar fasciitis I have only run about four times since 2007.
Post race
Warm down:

Chicken Burito, banana, beer, water, sitting around for a long time!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

This was really a test/training day for me to see if I could survive and not feel pain in my feet or back.

Event comments:

Boulder Peak is a good race overall, but the run is dreary. The bike ride through farmland with mountain views is gorgeous as always in Boulder.

I'll have to see if my body can handle regular training and hope to "race" next year.

Nice job getting out there and doing the Peak Zev!  I know you have been going through some injuries.  Hey, I think your time is wrong...quick addition in my head has you under 4 hours...not over 7!  Anyway, good to see you getting back out there!

Well, glad to have read your race report.  I swam way off course as well.  Way to work through the cramp and PF issues...was that you that I offered my gel to on the run course?  I saw someone having a bad cramp...  Way to go and finish a tough race!

Thanks for the positive notes! I tried to fix my report....I was ONLY out there for 4 hours, not 7, Oh my!

I am excited to report that only my left quad is sore (unusually sore) and my feet and back feel good. I am anxious to try running this weekend.

Andria, that may have been me...I got offered jelly beans, gel, a stretcher... I said F it all and ran after the turn around.
