Subject: No running. No riding. What to do?

I've managed to irritate my old childhood osgood-schlatters injury so have been told to back off the training (i.e. cut out running and most riding) for a several weeks as rest is the only way to get it better.

The injury is not particularly painful at the moment so I'm hoping I caught it early enough to minimise the recovery time. 6 months off all sports as a kid was not fun

So I'm spending more time at the pool, and found a great water running training plan http://www.pfitzinger.com/labreports/9wkH2O.htm.

Whatelse can I do in the mean time to stay active and in shape. I think I'll do a couple of good stretching sessions per week, and pick up some core strength exercises again (don't particularly need them but stressing some muscles will feel good).

Any other thoughts?

Cheers

Gerrard

In the words of Nemo's pal Dory, "Just keep swimming, swimming swimming"!  Hope you're feeling better soon!

Just going to parrot what's been said:  Swimmmmmmm.  If you put in a good effort in the pool, your overall fitness will likely improve.  At least this was my experience after a six month swim-only layoff from biking and running.

Sorry to hear it.  I'm out of that game as well.  Unless you can elliptical or do spinning classes, I think you juet need to accept that running and biking fitness will basically be lost for that period, but youwill be a kick azz swimmer!

Strength training.  Core, upper body, and whatever lower body you can do without aggravating the injury.  Can you do calves, hamstring, quads (non weight bearing like quad extensions)?  You can accomplish a lot by getting stronger and then folding in fitness when you get back to aerobic training.

x2.  I would also suggest some yoga.  With strength training you can "maintain" your endurance strength by adding in 30-45min yoga sessions (as long as it doesn't aggravate the injury).  And always keep your body guessing with the yoga by doing strength yoga, flexibility yoga, cycling yoga, ect.

anyone oppose to this suggestion?

Sounds like you could also see a nutritionist or a doctor that specializes in this injury to change your diet to help minimize the healing time.

I'm in the same position, and same mindset. The great part about being a triathlete though is if you get injured, you very rarely are completely sidelined because there is usually one of the sports that you can still do to maintain aerobic fitness and keep you from going out of your mind. :D

That said, remember that the doctor said that rest is the only way for your injury to heal - so I would try to resist from seeking out too many alternative cross training plans and focus on resting and swimming. Being out 2 or 3 weeks is bad enough, but it would be worse to have to extend that after having not biked or swum for so long because of insufficient rest!

I'm trying to convince myself the same thing and I know, it blows chunks.

I've been sidelined for almost 6 weeks of NO activity (well, hand-crank ergometer anyone?)

Can finally get in the pool next week   Oh, and wall slides are definitely in the plan :/

Dear friend sent me books to read on training for endurance events (ie Ironman) and Sports Nutrition for Endurance athletes.  If you can't train, you might as well learn how to train properly once you can.

GOOD LUCK!!!!

Wow 6 weeks of nothing is rough. Bet that pool is going to feel great!

And I think you need all the good wishes from people here on BT way more than me!

To everyone else - thanks for the ideas and support. I was a bit grumpy this morning because it was sunny for the first time in ages and perfect for a nice long ride. I went to the pool tho and really enjoyed it.

I've been doing a fair bit of running over the last few months and had just stepped up the biking recently, so I've decided a short break from both those will actually be a good thing. I know I'll come back mentally fresh and itching for it again as I did after a 3 week layoff after IM.

So now it's all about the rest to keep the layoff as short as possible.

Thanks again

Gerrard

I've been struggling w/ runners knee for 2 months now, and I actually feel like it's taken off some of the pressure (self imposed) to train. So, just "enjoy" the injury - swim a lot, and hit up the bar even more!
