Total Time = 2h 21m
Overall Rank = 31/273
Age Group = M 40-44
Age Group Rank = 1/26
Pre-race routine:

get up at 4, coffee, load car, go
Event warmup:

got in the water for a few minutes to get an idea of the water temp
Swim
  • 24m 1s
  • 1500 yards
  • 01m 36s / 100 yards
Comments:

The idea of the swim was to try and hold back a bit, to see if I could hold back some so that there might be more left for pushing the bike. The mantra was to remember that the point of the swim is to get to the bike ... you do not have to be the first out of the water ... you do not have to be the first out of the water ... just get to the bike ...
What would you do differently?:

Not stand up partway through the first leg to take a look around. It was weird part way out to the first buoy everyone is standing up looking around; so I did as well.
Transition 1
  • 02m 6s
Bike
  • 1h 06m 28s
  • 23 miles
  • 20.76 mile/hr
Comments:

It was good, I wanted to push harder than I have in the past and kept my heart rate up about 10bpm higher than I did for the race here in May. I could definitely feel it towards the end, but I was still aware enough to ease off for the last couple of minutes to help ease the transition to the run.
What would you do differently?:

Double check the mechanics before the race as I had a problem with shifting from time to time ... chain slipping into another gear.
Transition 2
  • 01m 4s
What would you do differently?:

not much, it was good
Run
  • 47m 24s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 38s  min/mile
Comments:

Kept an eye on the heart rate for the first half, then to red line - 10, then with a mile or so to go to red line. Happy with the time, faster than I thought it would be.
What would you do differently?:

Get a better feel for the legs earlier, get more used to the pacing, still had enough left at the end where I might have been able to go to red line a little earlier ... or more likely go to red line - 10 earlier and leave the final push as is.
Post race
Warm down:

some water melon & listen to the band for a bit before heading back into town.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Running the too hot to handle 15km on Saturday.

Event comments:

Great race, lots of fun. Would have been nice if they could have had the results posted a little bit more quickly we might have tried to hand around a bit longer if we had known that I had placed in the age group. I usually figure that I am in no danger of winning anything so we went back into town for some early afternoon appointments. That being said, great race, well organized, lots of fun.

Wow! Nice job! Impressive! I was at the last water stop at Too Hot to Handle. Great weather that day for a run!
