Total Time = 1h 18m 50s
Overall Rank = 25/117
Age Group = 15 to 99
Age Group Rank = 22/47
Pre-race routine:

Left Vancouver very early and drove to Langley. Checked out the pool and hung around taking my time to set up the bike and just relax prior to race time. Because this is just my second individual triathlon, just being around other more experienced athletes is an education in itself, watch and learn.

Event warmup:

No real warmup just tried to relax and take it all in.
Swim
  • 11m 46s
  • 400 meters
  • 02m 56s / 100 meters
Comments:

Had a great first 200 meters. This race was self seeded with ten second staggered starts. Got caught up in a huge bottleneck after 200 meters and basically had to wait at the end of the pool for the others in front of me to go ahead. Did a lot of wading during some lengths waiting for others to proceed ahead of me. 15 second staggered starts between swimmers would have been more appropriate.
What would you do differently?:

Will probably seed myself a little ahead of my actual time to avoid bottleneck of swimmers ahead of me (although this method used by others is probably what caused the bottleneck in the first place)
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Big problems putting on biking jersey while wet. Ripped race number off while trying to pull jersey over my head and had to spend time pinning it back on.

What would you do differently?:

Look into purchasing one piece tri suit or setting up a towel in transition to dry off with. Also try to bike and run without socks to reduce time. Probably don't need to have biking gloves on for a 21 KM bike either. May begin using a number belt.
Bike
  • 43m 16s
  • 21 kms
  • 29.12 km/hr
Comments:

Course is mostly secondary highway roads with one hill near start. Some wind going outbound made for slightly difficult ride. Well marked course with good marshalling and police presence at major intersections.
What would you do differently?:

Definitely work on cornering. Almost lost it going around a corner too fast. Need to spend more time on bike and work on obtaining a lower center of gravity and choosing a better line going into hard corners.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Typical T2
What would you do differently?:

Practice, practice, practice. Can get much better times with more efficient transitions.
Run
  • 23m 50s
  • 5 kms
  • 04m 46s  min/km
Comments:

Nice run but could use better signage or additional volunteers to mark route. Almost took wrong path at fork along trail. Also could have more signage etc last kilometer to mark route through residential area.
As usual, started too fast and had to slow down before settling in at normal pace and finished pretty strong with a sprint.
What would you do differently?:

Do better job of pacing myself and more running sessions.
Post race
Warm down:

No real warm down, just continued walking and took in the festivities.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of swimming and running sessions prior to race. Need to spend more time in the pool and running. Also need to practise transitions to make up as much time as possible.

Event comments:

Good race. Although some things could have been better or improved, this was generally a good race with friendly staff and volunteers. Some events were a little delayed but had no great impact on an overall great event. I would do this race again.
