![]() | ![]() Hello all! I'm new to the board and to triathalons in general. I had been tossing around the idea of competing, but never signed up. I have changed all that and will be competing in my first tri on 8/9. I just have a few questions 1. If any of you are familiar w/the DQ sprint tri in Jersey, any recommendations on where I can get some decent open water practice? At this point my swimming as been restricted to the pool at the gym. 2. Are iPods allowed during the run? Running is my WORST event and I think, w/my ipod, I may die a happier death ![]() 3. Are you automatically given the boot if you have to walk at all during your run? I've been dealing w/some knee pain (hoping it will lessen by then) and I find that I sometimes have to walk a little and then start jogging again. Thanks guys! |

Not sure about the swim, but iPods are almost surely not allowed. It's an automatic DQ in any USAT sanctioned race. Tough love, but you're probably going to have to HTFU and run w/o music. Definitely no problem with walking during the run. |

![]() | ![]() LOL! When I saw DQ I thought the same thing and was really excited to see what was waiting for me at the finish line!! I was bummed to find out that is was Danzizen and Quigley (sp?) Thanks for the heads up about the ipod. I figured it would be a no no. Sigh. Oh well. |

Sneaky Slow ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() KenyonTri - 2009-07-23 10:08 AM .... It's an automatic DQ in any USAT sanctioned race. The race is already one big DQ. I'd be as likely to do a race called "DQ Sprint Tri" as I would be to do a race called "DNF Sprint Tri." |

Thanks guys! not a DQ -- a variable time penalty (Rule 5.8). Still, don't do it. I'll venture to say you'll enjoy the race more without them, and I'm fairly certain that others will enjoy the race more if you don't wear them. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I've done the marlton one the past and it's a good race. CGI racing has some open water swims http://www.cgievents.com/cgiracing/njst/openwaterswims.html and there is an ocean swim down at barnegate this weekend: http://www.lmsports.com/barnswim.pdf ipods are illegal but you won't be alone starting chatting w/ others out there and you'll have a good day. walking is allowed in tri's and you probably won't be the only walking. good luck and have fun |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() No need for iPod while running. Just find a rock song that you like with a tempo that matches your running cadence. Then listen to it HUNDREDS of times before the race. You'll start to hear that song in your head even without the iPod!!! BTW- It helps if the lyrics could relate to your experience- like the old REO Speedwagon classic "Keep Pushin' On". That one helped me do a PB 10k. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() D&Q puts on a lot of great races in the South Jersey area. The Kings Grant one is a new race just added I think two years ago. However, Marlton Lakes which is on Labor Day weekend has been around for years. Like 20+ years.... For short sprint tri's they put on good event. The cool thing about their events especially the Marlton Lakes race...you never know who is going to show up. Some years the field is not very competitive some years you get every pro/elite in the Middle Atlantic region and beyond. Lots of great racers and usually an overall good time. For the OP I suggest you go to the USAT web site and read the rules before you race. Also CGI Racing puts on Open Water swims on Thursdays. Lake Wenonah. Not sure how much longer they run them though. |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have done the Kings Grant Tri the last 2 years (it was my 1st tri too)...it's a fun tri...nice uncomplicated course. The water is...murky...thick...dark... I would DEFINITELY hit the CGI swim on a Thursday night at lake Wenonah...check out the New Jersey board for more info. People do wear iPods for the run but it isn't legal and results in a penalty. The run will keep your interest though...it's a short run on paved roads before it goes off into the woods on a dirt/rock access road/path. You can definitely walk on the run without being given the boot. You won't be the only one walking. Good luck see ya there :-) |

![]() | ![]() Lake Garrison in monroeville, nj has open water. no marked distances, but you can try it out. It's just a public swim place, better than nothing. Apparently the cgi one is done for the season. I've never been to Garrison. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My wife did this tri a few years back. The swim is in a very shallow lake, so this might be one of the absolute best ones if you are inexperienced in open water. You can actually stand up at any time during the swim without a problem... The bike coarse is very flat and well marked and so is the run. What ever you do, do not wear the iPod during the run! Not only is it illegal, it's also potentially dangerous for others. How do you expect do hear someone coming from behind if you're listening to music? I can see using it on a warmup on a trainer, but come on... on the run?! |

That would rule!!! The only thing that could be better is if you could find a beer and hot wing sponsor!!! If walking was a dq then I would have only completed one 5k ever. Have fun at your race. |

Come to the Jersey shore and practice your open water swims. Our local tri club, Jersey Shore Tri meets for open water swims. Check it out http://jstriclub.org/swim.htm |
