Obviously swimming is much different than running and biking.  I'm finding that out, luckily before I actually Try my Tri.  The total workout was 2400 yards.  I probably swam about 1000 yards.

I did get a little dizzy about half way through.   I did eat a granola bar before going and drank some water, but still felt dizzy about halfway through.

Is this probably a product of my heart rate or maybe something else with the swimming?  At it's worst, it's almost like a vertigo problem....

On another note, i thought the workout was good and actually learned a lot about technique in one class.  I plan to continue my training with the classes as it was very beneficial.

Glad you liked your class.

Two ideas for the dizziness:
1. did you get in a long enough cooldown?  if I swim really hard and then just pop out of the water I don't feel so hot.
2. earplus will probably help !

I got in a good cool down.  The worst dizzyness was in the middle of the swimming workout.  Probably when my heart rate was highest.

I've felt it before early in the morning while doing a very hard workout with weights.  Never really felt it while running early though.

Did you feel short of breath when you got dizzy? It takes awhile to get used to the breathing pattern during swimming. Even if you breathe every stroke you're not breathing as continuously as you would during a run or bike ride. I was a competitive swimmer growing up, but after years out of the pool I'm finding that breath control is the hardest part of my swim to get back. I was often dizzy at first, and still get headaches after harder workouts now. Keep up the work with the coach - maybe s/he can give you some drills to work on breath control if that is the problem. Good luck!

That's possible, as i'm sure my breathing seems to be suffering.  It's hard to get in a rythm.  I try every three strokes, but i get lost.  Every four seems to work, but then i'm breathing out of the same side everytime (which may not matter).  It seems hard to get a good breath in during the swim.  I'll ask about that next time.  she did mention breathing without losing momentum when i bring my head up to breath...sure it will take some time as i have never swam competitively.

I have had the vertigo feeling happen while I was swimming open water, but not in a pool. My swim teacher said this was common for people in their first season of lots of swimming. I have not had the feeling since. If you are anything like me then it will pass as you keep swimming.

Also it was recommended that I get ear plugs. I got them but always forget to use them, so I can't say if they work or not.

Keep at it. It'll do nothing but increase your swimming ability. Very soon, that 1000yrd will be 2000, then 3000, then 4000, etc.

Slow down if you have to. Try to drink some more. Look into some earplugs. They'll help.

Just stick with it and you'll come to enjoy it!

Along with everything else that has been mentioned, bring a water bottle (or sports drink) to the Master's workout and keep it on the deck at the end of your lane. Take a sip during your rest intervals. You'd be surprised how much you actually sweat during a hard swim workout!

And don't wear your watch while you swim.  That just screams "I AM A TRIATHLETE" before anyone sees your first stroke!

I"m going to try the earplugs.  I don't own a watch, yet.  Most of the people at the class seemed to be people training for Triathlons....was an interesting but very nice group.  I think i was the only one there in a regular men's bathing suit.  Don't own any speedo's and just have 1 pair of tri shorts (guess i could wear these).

I would definitely recommend the tri shorts over baggy trunks. You would be amazed at how much drag they produce. Sports Authority has sales of speedos fairly often. I got mine for less than 30 bucks. BTW I joined the local masters program a couple of months ago and I love it! It has improved my swimming 1000 percent!
