Subject: Another Newbie...
Hi there! I'm another new one. I'm 33, a mom of 4 and looking to get back into shape (seeking to lose a good 30lbs). My friend has sort of dragged me into signing up for a triathlon but I'm really excited about doing this. There's going to be a short triathlon in my town at the end of June. Its a 1/4 mi swim, 16mi bike ride and 3 mile run. I'm not entirely convinced that I can actually do this in the short amount of time that I have to train but I'm working hard and hoping for the best.

I would love some advice. In your opinion, do you think its possible to train in three months for a short triathlon? I'm able to commit an hour each day to training and willing to do whatever it takes nutrition wise. Is this a real possibility?

Thanks!

- Rosemarie

if u can stay afloat during the swim, u can do the tri....try the plan at http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/Programs/16wksprint2x.htm  it is the easiest...can u do the times comfortable in week one?  if so, start their...yeah, u will be one month short BUT if your pace is decent and you dont mind walking some in the run (walking is recomended) THEN DO IT!!!!

OR start off in month 2....that is ONLY if your fine with the volume...if your not horribly out of shape, that could be a doable option.  just listen to your body, dont overdo it and have fun.

good luck!

Sugarsnap, as far as I'm concerned, you can do a sprint triathlon...anybody can. It just comes down to whether you want to simply finish or finish in a specific amount of time. Try the training plan suggested by Ron and you might be pleasantly surprised at what you can accomplish if you set your mind to it. Good luck....and welcome aboard. Do keep asking questions and do let us know how you are progressing.

As long as you can make some time for training, I think that you can definately do it. Just don't worry about speed and the distance will be attainable. Good Luck!

Yup - you can do it. With Ron - I'm gop ahead and mix run / walk - also swim / float change up striokes to stay comfortable and bike easy - the joy is in the journey not setting speed records.

Sugarsnap --- you can do it.Just be consistent with your training, and don't overdo anything to get injured.

And welcome to the site.

Hi Rosemarie,

The variety of exercise in running/biking/swimming seems just about ideal for burning a lot of calories in a week and creating the all-purpose body for yourself.

As for three months to get ready for a sprint, the answer is a resounding yes.  You can completely transform your body in three months.  Start where you are and build slowly and consistently.  An hour a day is perfect.  Keep the intensity of each session pretty low at first while you find out how quickly you can recover from one day to the next, but maintain the duration if you can.   A common problem is starting out with too much intensity per day.  Beginners tend to start with a routine that they can do for one day but then cannot sustain it for six days straight.   The increasing fatigue seems like a fitness regression instead of progress.  That of course leads to frustration, doubts about their physical ability, and even injuries from trying to push too hard.  Slow and steady progress is the key.  Post on how your are feeling to get some feedback from people who are or have been right there.  Rest is a key to progress.

I love the enthusiasm here. Welcome to the group, it's good to see people with goals and how excited they are to achieve them. Ask plenty of questions if you need help and keep us informed as to how the training is going. And be sure and post race results when you enter them. We wanna cheer for you too!
