CO2 is my primary system for everything for the convenience.  I carry a frame pump while commuting or on long training rides but strip it off for short races.  Haven't done any long races so don't know what I'd do...

C02... have you ever tried to pump a tire up to 115-120lbs with a small hand held pump? Not easy and very tiring.

X2.... That's what I carry. This is the one I have: Innovations Second Wind Granted.... it would probably take a reeeaaaallllly long time to pump up a tube by hand with this thing, but at least I know I have a back-up if CO2 fails me.

That looks awesome...about how many inches in length is it?

I have a frame-mounted pump, but my frame is so small (I think it is only 48 cm...short legs!) that it really interferes with my water bottle.  This one looks like maybe it would fit in my seat bag.

I have a pretty small bag underneath my seat. It's a little too long to fit in the bag when fully assembled, but if I unscrew the top (CO2 pump part) I can fit the two pieces in separately.

I was surprised how long it took to see this post. pumping up a tire with a small frame pump to even 100 psi is a hard enough task.  Only did that twice before I went out and bought CO2.  It does have a pump built in, but nothing I could use to get a road tire up to 100psi with.

I bring a tube, a few patches and 3 CO2 carts. with me on all rides. I've ridden my bike over 3k miles now and have never had 2 flats in one ride, so the odds of having 4 I have to imagine are slim enough to not worry about.

Depends on your pump. I love my Topeak Road Morph, can get you over 120psi if you desire, not much more effort than a floor pump.
