Subject: Andover/North Andover/Boxford MA Area Open Water Swims?
Hi there -

I'm a total newbie... training for my first sprint tri in September.  I have only recently worked my way up to 800-1000 yard swims in the pool (MAJOR accomplishment given that I couldn't even do 50 yards without stopping about 2 months ago).  HOWEVER... I attended an OW swim clinic a couple of weeks ago and it was horrible (or rather, I was horrible).  I rented a wetsuit, and they had us do a couple of "simulated" race starts with about 30 people per group... and I left VERY frustrated.  I was completely unable to even put my face in the water and swim like a normal person for the first couple of loops.  I went out for a third loop by myself after the clinic was over, and had a little more success, but still nothing like my pool swims.  The wetsuit felt horrible, but I'm a total cold water wimp!  Uggh...

Needless to say, I think I need to practice more in OW!

Anyone know of someone looking for a newbie training partner for early AM open water swims in this area (Andover, North Andover, Boxford)?  I hear Stiles Pond in Boxford is a good place...

Thanks!
Cindy

Stiles is a PM haven for members of Trifury. Not sure if there is a lot of action in the AM there. I swim in Wilmington at Silver Lake. That seems to be where most of the Trifury AM action is. 5 PM is a common swim time for those swimming at Stiles and Silver Lake, but the days get switched up a lot, so I am not sure which days they are week to week. Good luck finding someone to swim with.

BTW, welcome to the world of BT

Thanks for the info!  Yeah, 7am is too late.  Bummer.  Maybe I'll just have to spring for a babysitter some Friday evening.  Since I'm not a member of TriFury (i.e. I don't pay the $25 per year), do you have any idea what the etiquette is for hooking up with them for a swim?

And thanks for the welcome!

guests are always welcome ( encouraged to join when they feel ready). I figure Wilminton for Silver Lake at 6 AM is too late for you too then? There is a group swimming tomorrow AM there as well. Most OW groups that I have encountered (limited number of them) are receptive to people jumping in. Just make sure they know you are new to OWS and get a feel that someone will stick with you, not just be aware of your presance in the water.

Woops... didn't check this in time.  Actually 6am probably wouldn't be too late.  Since I'm thinking that I'd only swim for 30 minutes or so, I could probably be home in time for hubby to leave for work.

Where do you find out about when groups swim in the AM at either Stiles or Silver Lake?

Also, what are the water temps at both places in the AM?  I don't have a wetsuit.

Thanks!

I am trying to put SL updates in my blog when I find out about them. Stiles morning swims I do not find out about much. I get all the info from the Trifury yahoo group threads when they pop up in my e-mail. I know you are not a member, and that is cool. Like I said, I will try and post them in my blog when I hear about them.
