Veteran  126  |  Subject: Helmets?Given David's/newbz's experience with a careless driver today, I started thinking about my helmet and how I've been wanting to replace it for a while. I bought my first road bike a few months ago from a hole in the wall LBS and the helmet they gave me was just a random one hanging on a peg that you could tell had been used a few times. Not too sure about the quality, either. Is there a brand/model that cyclists and triathletes prefer to use? Obv. I'm not talking top of the line $$$, but just something that will do a good job of keeping my brains where they're supposed to be. |

Champion 7233  | Subject: RE: Helmets? you dont need an expensive one, it just needs to be certified and fit. i have been using until todya, a 40 dollar bell helmet. whatever their cheapest one is. it is now in the trash, but any good helmet will do the trick. check out giro, rudy project, or bell. |

Any helmet that has the ASTM/SEI logos and fits is good to go. I would definitely scrap yours pronto, though. Make sure to actually smash it beyond use - I've had kids take an old helmet that had taken a HARD fall (from cantering horse into concrete) out of the garbage. Not good. I don't know as much about bike helmets, but with horses, the higher-dollar helmets actually perform WORSE in independent testing. Besides, if you don't spend as much on a helmet, you are lot more likely to replace it when you need to. |

The certification that USAT officials look for, and which is now pretty standard in the industry, is that of the Consumer Products Safety Commission, or CPSC. Look for that instead, but I think you'll find almost any new cycling-specific helmet will bear that certfication. The more expensive helmets may fit better and provide greater ventilation, but all provide the madated level of protection. |

After going 23 mph head first into a metal street sign and my helmet allowing me to walk away, I upgraded and bought a high end helmet figuring it was worth it..fit means it stays in place when an accident might occur...staying in place means it can do its job better. I have a Giro helmet that was about $120. It's peanuts considering all the money I spend on this sport. |
