Clydesdale looking to get a lighter wheel but at 240 lbs, I realize I probably shouldn't use the same wheel as the lighter crowd.  So, I'm looking for a recommendation for a 700cc front wheel, for everyday riding, not a race wheel.  I'd like to keep it around $250, but if something is really recommended, I'd go as high as $350. Thanks.

I've had no problems riding any wheels (my weight ranging from 240 down to 200) with as few as 20 spokes.

I used to have a set of Mavic Cosmics (there's a front in the classifieds currently) that is frickin' bombproof and decently aero.

The front doesn't see as much stress as the rear, so you could go lighter with that as compared to the rear.

Otherwise, look for a used 404 or Hed Jet/Stinger if you want some thing a bit more aero.

Ried0428,

I'm also a Clyde and when I started riding I was about 230lbs. I started training as a means off losing weight. I bought a new bike and thought about upgrading wheels to something lighter when I decided to enter my first tri. After thinking about it, I figured I would be spending about 400.00 to save 'relatively' a few grams.

I told myself prior to buying lighter components/wheels/tires work on my body and achieve some of the free speed. I'm down to 207lbs now, still on the same bike and much faster. If you need to replace a bad wheel by all means, but if you are just looking to upgrade you may be better served to use your current wheel set and let them take the abuse while you are training and losing weight.

Just my opinion, but I hope it helps.

I've rode 2200+ miles last year on stock B12 wheels at 250 - 280 lbs and never bad an issue.  On my previous bike (Fuji Aloha 1.0) I broke 2 spokes on the read wheel and had my LBS make me a cutom wheel for about a c-note and never had another problem.  I have never had an issue with the front wheel.  The rear wheel tends to carry more of the load so if you are going to have problems, you will see it there first.

Thanks for the input- I was offline all weekend. I should have been more clear in the original post. I was going downhill pretty fast and hit a pothole and broke my Bontrager front wheel. (Not complaining about the  Bontrager --no wheel would have survived that)   Otherwise, as Houstonrider mentioned, it isn’t worth if you have a good working wheel to spend hundreds of bucks to save a few grams.  But, because I need a new wheel, I might as well do my homework and see what other people have success with.

I will look at the Classifieds- thanks for that tip

I've got bontragers on mine and at 230 or so last fall my front wheel hated me... at 212 now its not bad but still I can't stand up and pump without it flexing like mad. It is a 16spoke radial and I just don't think it can handle the weight even where I am now.. It stays true but flexes so much..
