This is absolutely disgusting... why bother training your butt off reaching for goals that seem out of reach when someone can go onto ebay and bid for it. Seems like the whole climb everest deal.

I hope Ironman doesn't view this as a way of making money... Be a shame to lose that feeling of accomlishment by earning your spot!!! (I know we have the lottery, but that is more valid in my eyes than e-bay!!!)

If you read the details, the 6 slots they are auctioning are completely separate from qualifying slots, as well as lottery slots. 100% of the money raised from these auction slots are going towards a fund to build a YMCA on the big island. And the buyer still has to show that he/she has completed a 1/2 iron distance race in the year leading up to the race.

So it's a win-win situation all around. The race isn't going to look any different by having 6 extra people in it. WTC gets face recognition on the island for their efforts. If the buyer is from the US, they get a tax writeoff. The people of Kona get the benefit of having a new YMCA building.

Yeah, I was thinking this same thing, actually I was thinking someone was out to make a buck for themselves...then I read the ad.

The bid was up to over $20k this morning. The proceeds go to the local YMCA in Hawaii. There's also a qualifier that the entry has to be "validated" by completing a Half-IM race before the Oct. 15 date.

As I see it, one is paying to skew the lottery in their favor and the money is going to the local YMCA. Hmmm...I wonder if Ryan Sutter got in this way.

Get a grip, you act like this is something important. The same people that say you have to qualify are the ones saying you can purchase a spot. It's their race and it's not taking a spot away from anyone so why is it 'disgusting'? A few years back you didn't have to qualify, was that 'disgusting'? And you obviously didn't read the auction because it is to benefit the Kona YMCA, they done this for the last few years.

This is actually the 4th slot to be sold.

1st went for $31,100
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7150442188&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1

2nd went for $33,400
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7152166057&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1

3rd went for $31,600
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7152166483&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1

Well at least all of the proceeds are going to a charity and it is tax deductible. Is it any worse than them giving slots to celebrities?

I just won the bid!!! I'm going to Kona!!! Just kidding. Putting aside the fact that some could call unfair, $10,000 isn't that bad a deal - not that I have the money.

I think they should be able to do whatever they want. It's their race and plus, like said before, it goes 100% charity.

If you don't like it, you don't have to race.

I can't wait too see this YMCA. It should be pretty amazing for the money they are raising. I was upset when I first saw it on Ebay, thinking someone was tring to make a quick buck, but charity is ok. I would rather see this than some celebrity get a slot.

IM CDA is a better deal. Locals can pay into a Community Fund supporting various local organizations and charities. It's only a $1000.

Sorry I was making assumptions (damn computer atwork doesn't give me access to ebay!!!) it is good that it is for charity, I was thinking someone was profiting from qualifying themselves and accepting a spot, then deciding not to race.

My biggest and most obvious problem is and always has been shooting my mouth off, before understanding the facts.

The winning bid amounts for the entry slots:

Slot #1 $30,100
Slot #2 $33,400
Slot #3 $31,600
Slot #4 $36,000
Slot #5 $36,200
Slot #6 $38,601

Start saving your pennies now for next year. :P

The odd thing, no one that has won a slot has left either positive or negative feedback either this year nor last.
