Subject: Realistic Time for 1st Tri
I am racing for the first time this coming weekend in a Sprint distance tri, 500 meter, 18 mile ride, 3 mile run.  I just started training for it in June, however I have been a cyclist for a while and will average 16ish MPH on a 45-50 mile ride.  My run is bout 10-12min. miles, the unknown factor is my swim time.  I am not a great swimmer, yet, but other than just wanting to finish, what do you think would be a realistic time for finishing?

There are a couple hills on the bike, but the run is basically flat.

Thanks.

Very similar situation to mine.  I started training in June and had been cycling for several years.
My swim pace was 2m28sec per 100m, but I really didn't start swimming until June, and looking back at my log, my swim pace started out at 3m15sec per 100 meters.  So, you are probably looking at something between 16 to 17 minutes to finish the swim if you use my first time swim pace....not that my time means anything!  My total transition time was about 5 minutes.  So, if that is any indicator, that would put you right around the 2 hour mark to finish if your bike pace and run pace are as you indicate below.

Good luck!

Pure guess - 1:50:00  13 min swim, 2 min tran 1, 1 hour bike, 2 min tran, 33 min run.  My first goal is always to finish and not embarrass myself, then I try to hit more specific time goals.
