Woman Killed by Falling Branch in Fairmount Park

by KYW's Pat Loeb

Philadelphia police are investigating a freak accident in Fairmount Park that killed a woman on Wednesday night.

Police say a woman was jogging in Valley Green at about 7pm when she was struck and killed by a falling tree branch.

Chief inspector Scott Small says she was not carrying any identification and they were trying to identify her:

"She's a white female in her 20s or early 30s. She's about 5'5", 120 pounds, and has brown, shoulder-length, curly hair."

Parks and Recreation commissioner Mike DiBerardinis says it was a case of tragically bad timing:

"It's a very, very sad and tragic situation but branches do, in this system that has so many trees, fall; it's a tragedy it just happened to fall as this woman walked under it."

Authorities say the woman was wearing an iPod and may not have heard the branch break off.

Oh no, how awful.  Wow, when she woke up that morning, she had no idea it would be her last day on Earth.  Thoughts and prayers to her loved ones.

And this is a reminder for all of us to carry an ID when we are out.  I lost my Road ID wrist band and just ordered a replacement a few days ago.
