Subject: My first DNFSo I was really excited to start my first olympic distance. I travelled 180 miles, got a hotel the whole bit. Got to the race in the morning and did the whole warmup thing. I was ready. Got into the water and after only 200m I felt like I couldn't breathe in my wetsuit. Yikes, I'm gonna drown, I should quit and save myself so my newborn child doesn't grow up fatherless! No, I can swim for over an hour without stopping, don't be dumb. After a little back float and some inspirational self talk I got my self back on track and finished the 1500m swim in a decent time. On to the bike, feeling great, spinning high rpms and cruising. Got to the big downhill and hit 35mph. I hit an unmarked pothole and blew my front tire NOOOOOO!!! No problem when I get to the bottom of the hill I'll jump off and change out the tire. Problem, this course featured a turn at the bottom of the hill. I slowed myself to about 24mph but had to try the turn, not so good on just a rim and out it went from under me. I hit the pavement pretty hard and when I got up I couldn't walk on my left foot. I wasn't sure how bad I had hurt myself until I looked down at my ankle. It was HUGE, it didn't hurt as much as it should have though based on how big it was. After panicking I decided to take a look and see how badly broken it was......hold my breath.......roll down my sock.....and realize that it was my timing chip bracelet under my sock. IDIOT!!! After some xrays I was diagnosed with..... a bruise on the bottom of my heel. I felt like a dork but at least I get to "tri" again in two weeks. Yay! The journey of triathlon is really awesome and I can't wait to do another. |
