Overcast
Total Time = 2h 47m
Overall Rank = 151/159
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 0/
Pre-race routine:

Packed everything up the night before.
Got up at 5AM. Walked the dog and put the bikes on the rack. This is a point to point race, so we had to drop the van off at the finish line, and the running gear at T2, then went to the lake for body markings and to set the bikes up.
Event warmup:

I ate a bagel and protein bar, plus drank some water.
Swim
  • 11m 52s
  • 440 yards
  • 02m 42s / 100 yards
Comments:

I knew Kevin was struggling, so that was affecting my concentration (even though I said it wouldn't). I made it around the first bouy and was doing fine. Then I got kicked in the head by some one from the wave behind mine. After that, I took in a lung full of water, and couldn't catch my breath. I saw the Sherriff's boat heading in the direction where I had last seen Kevin, so as I got out of the water I was worried. Then heard some one saying there had been a man down in the water and he had to be pulled out.
What would you do differently?:

Practice OWS more. Not worry about Kevin.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

There was no T1 time. It was factored into the bike time. This was not good for me. I was so worried about Kevin, my head was pounding from the kick, and my lungs were burning from the drink of lake water. I bet it was atleast 5 minutes (maybe 7) by the time I got on my bike. The milk crate I brought to sit on, broke! Threw me on my Arse!
I did a good job of setting everything up before the race.
What would you do differently?:

I just didn't realize how much a slow T! time would affect my over all time. I'll definately go faster next time.
Bike
  • 1h 36m 40s
  • 19.8 miles
  • 12.29 mile/hr
Comments:

I was not prepared for these hills! I was battling a raging headache from the kick, and I couldn't catch my breath from the lungs full of water. All of the motivating talk I had prepared to make it up the hills, were used on getting rid of the headache and regulating my breathing.

I didn't like that both transition times are factored into the bike time. This easily added 10 minutes to my overall bike time :(
What would you do differently?:

Ride more hills in training! Rush during the transitions!
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

None. It was factored into the bike time.
What would you do differently?:

Move it!
Run
  • 58m 36s
  • 4.5 miles
  • 13m 01s  min/mile
Comments:

ARGGHH! This was so tough. The mile long hill was pretty killer. My calves were cramping. I walked part of the hiil, because I started to get intense knee pain- I think it was muscle cramping, but at the time i thought it might be more, So I played it safe.
Given that I'm a slow runner on the best day, and the hills wer tough, it wasnt too bad. I do wish i had pushed a little harder and got below the 13 minute pace.
What would you do differently?:

Push it a little harder. Now i know what muscle cramps in my knees feel like, and I won't stop because of them.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Massive headache, swallowed water into lungs

Event comments:

The volunteers were awesome! State troopers were at all intersections and were great at directing traffic.

I really don't like the transition times being factored into the bike time. Next time I'll move faster in the transitions.

Even though I rated this as too hard for my level, I really had a great time! It was so much fun!

Heidi,
Congratulations you did it!
I think you are extremely strong minded to battle through a bike and a tough run after those 2 horrid incidents in the water.  Give yourself loads of credit girl!
Now start planning that next one.

...and I guess I need to ask - how did hubby do?
