Total Time = 1h 13m 23s
Overall Rank = 148/336
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 5/9
Pre-race routine:

Coffee ready, loaded the bikes up and Bob and I drove 1 1/2 hours to the race site. Got squared away with chips, body marking, and put our stuff in transition.
MAN, it's been such a long time since I've done this. What am I doing here again?)
Event warmup:

Light jogging to warm up the muscles. Have to be careful since I'm so out of shape I didn't want to use up all my energy on the warmup! A few minutes before the race start I got into the water and swam a little bit to get used to just swimming in an open water setting again. Practiced how I would use my left arm and not hurt my shoulder.
Swim
  • 10m 5s
  • 400 yards
  • 02m 31s / 100 yards
Comments:

This was the part of the race I was most afraid of. Even this sprint distance, I've only swum 400 yds nonstop once without fins, and that was in a pool. OWS is a different animal.

I made sure to stay clear of everyone possible, so I went waaaay to the right. I was so afraid someone would kick my arm. Lots of focus on my stroke, making sure I didn't push too hard with the left arm, and more importantly, not overtaxing the right arm which has been doing most of the work for my left over the past year. Careful, careful, careful was all I kept thinking.
Transition 1
  • 00m 43s
Comments:

I was just so excited to have made it out of the water and still be in the race. I know I can bike or run/walk anything (not necessarily fast, but I knew I could finish if I got over the swim hump)
Bike
  • 32m
  • 10 miles
  • 18.75 mile/hr
Comments:

I don't usually leave transition with gears in the big front chain ring, but since I couldn't rely on my left arm/hand strength to change during the ride, I just had it ready and only moved the rear gears.

I surprised myself with this one. I couldn't really stay in aero position for too many minutes at a time because it hurt my shoulder, but still managed to push the bike anyway.
What would you do differently?:

Probably wouldn't have stayed in the aero bars as long as I did because even though it was intermittent, my shoulder was really bothering me after the race.
Transition 2
  • 01m 17s
Comments:

Took this transition slow. I don't usually wear socks for a sprint race, but I figured that I'm not here to race/compete, but just to try to complete the distances. No rush, no worries. With that motive, I might as well be as comfortable as possible. DEFINITELY took the extra time to put on the socks!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 29m 19s
  • 3 miles
  • 09m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

I knew I was going to have to walk some of this. It's something I'm not used to, but I'm not the same person I was when I used to race. I only had to walk a little bit on the first mile, then a bit more on the 2nd mile, and the 3rd mile I was REALLY pooped!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Post race
Warm down:

Walking around, drank recovery drink, bagel, shower, etc.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Everything.

Event comments:

This race wasn't for me to go fast in, or even to re-orient me back into racing. It was more of a sanity thing. Since my shoulder surgery last March and the unexpected problems that went along with it, my morale has gone by the wayside. I needed this. And I couldn't be happier with the result.
