Subject: Couple Bike Questions
I have my first race coming up in a few weeks. The race requires that all bikes be checked in the night before. Granted, I am sure I won't have the nicest bike out there but the thought of me leaving it out all night has me just a bit uneasy.

Is it reasonable to  expect there to be secuity at the transition area throughout the nice. Also, are you allowed to chain your bike to the rack?

Second completely of topic question. Do you wear the same race number that you use on the run on your bike?

Thanks.

In the past, when I did races that required you to leave the bike overnight, they had security.  You could not take a bike out of transition once it was in until the end of the race.  If you feel better, go ahead and use a chain, but don't take up more than your alloted space to do so.

You usually have the same number on your bike as on your run as on your body.  They generally try to match your body number to the bike number to make sure you don't leave with a better bike than you came with!

At my last big race, they made us check the bikes in the day before, and had security through-out the night.  Like the poster said above, nobody was allowed into transition after it closed, and the only way you could get your bike out was by matching your body-marked number to your bike.  If you feel better by locking it up, go for it, but just remember that you have to do something with that lock in the morning.

They actually give you two race numbers, one for the bike and one for the run.  Usually its an adhesive sticker that folds around the top tube.  Your run number is just like a running race bib, you can either attach it to your shirt by safety pins or use a fuel belt.  Personally, I'd spend the $7 and go buy a race belt.

I can't believe any race director would make you leave your bike overnight and not provide security.  You can ask them, and in the unlikely event that the answer is no, I'd seriously consider not doing that race.

Lock might not be a bad idea if it's possible, just make sure you take it off before the start.

Races I've done have had some form of adhesive number to put on the bike and also one to put on the helmet, so usually you don't have to wear the bib on the bike.

Fastest way is to wear it underneath your wetsuit, either pinned to your shirt (which you also wear under the wetsuit) or on a race belt.  If you use a race belt you can turn it around to the back on the bike so the bib isn't slapping against your legs while you pedal, and then turn it to the front for the run.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I'll probably pull the "look around and see what everyone else is doing". The group putting on this race is very well respected and puts on races all over GA. It probably won't be an issue but this was just one of the 8 million things running through my head about a race that is over a month away.

If you have to leave it over night, then they have security.  I would bet on it.  I guess I could technically lose that bet, but probably not.

As for race numbers, in all the races I have ever done, it is ok to NOT wear the number while biking becuase you have a number on your bike.  Then I have a race belt with my number on it at T2 and just put it on while running out.
