Some would consider me active, but there is no way I could do an IM in one year. Someone who describes himself as active by quantifying it with "marathons" (i.e., plural ) and throws in cycling and "a continuous active lifestyle" (i.e., didn't do a marathon 10 years ago but is currently in that lifestyle ) has at least a very strong base in one of the three legs and a non-couch base on a second leg of the IM, I would say is in a pretty decent stage to start IM training a year out. For me at least, that's the same boat as I was in. Keep in mind that the question was whether he can cross the finish line in one year not whether he will qualify for Kona in one year. I don't see how a person with that background can't do it in one year. You may not "do an IM" in one year but I'd bet if you start training for an IM one year out that you would be able to cross that finish line if you consider your current state as "active."
