Sunny
Total Time = 2h 26m 13s
Overall Rank = 47/332
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 12/62
Pre-race routine:

Plain Bagel with peanut butter & honey. Sugar-Free 12oz Red Bull, some water and a few sips of Gatorade. Car pooled to Clear Lake with fattyfatfat and KeriKadi. Arrived early (which was perfect) and set everything up!
Event warmup:

Warm-up run from transition area to the Hilton and back...maybe 1.5 miles at an easy pace. Got back to TA, stretched a little, slipped on the swim skin and went for a swim. Out to the second turn bouy for the sprint course - maybe 300m's. Double checked my TA set up and headed over to the start.
Swim
  • 28m 54s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 56s / 100 meters
Comments:

This was my fastest race swim to date. I kept in my pace and just swam! Didn't stop, didn't need to catch my breath ~ breathing was good! I definitely got stronger as the swim went on. The stretch headed to the finish got the most crowded and I took an elbow to the chin and some fingers to my left side of my goggles. Started to swim into the waves in front.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure... I need to learn to push during the swim in a race like I do in practice!
Transition 1
  • 01m 14s
Comments:

Struggled at the mount line with my shoes...jumping on and slipping feet into shoes. The shoes (left one mostly) spun around and I lost a few seconds jacking with that. Long run from swim and to bike mount...but overall good transition.
What would you do differently?:

fix shoes so they are set and not spinning. The ol' rubberband trick or something!
Bike
  • 1h 08m 48s
  • 24.8 miles
  • 21.63 mile/hr
Comments:

Was hoping to avg 22mph OA, and I thought I did - bike computer read 22-23 almost the entire course. The rough road and the intersection it dropped obviously ~ and the two overpass hills, slowed it a bit.
What would you do differently?:

I may have been able to and probably should have pushed the pace a little harder overall.
Transition 2
  • 01m 15s
Comments:

Long run into TA with bike - got shoes, visor and race belt and I was off. My garmin was messed up and I had to jack with it out on the run course to keep an eye on my pace...
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really...
Run
  • 46m
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 25s  min/mile
Comments:

Well, this was a redemption run of sorts for me... I had a terrible run leg in my last Tri (BSLT) and I always have confidence in my run which was fractured after the last race. I pushed the pace and held on to put down a good run. I passed a lot of runners and did not get passed ~ that is what I like to see ;)
I beat last years run course time and felt good the entire course. No nausea, hydration was good, was able to kick all the way to the finish!
What would you do differently?:

Given the temp, I think I pushed about as hard as I could have. Had it been cooler ~ run faster, simple as that!
Post race
Warm down:

drank a coke and had some watermelon. Stretched in the shade some and visited with friends and fellow racers!

Course: The first sections of the course were good. The section after the sprint course split was rough (2-1 mile section of chip seal / rough black top) Same effort on smooth (22mph - was 19.6 through that section) Then the intersection where the sprint course met back up... HOLY UNSAFE INTERSECTIONS!!! A major intersection between two highways and there were NO volunteers, no Police Officers... racers had to stop at the red light and wait!!! Then the cars going through almost hit one guy just in front of me! Not happy with the back half of the Oly bike course.

Look at you speed racer!  Sorry to hear they did not have enough volunteers on the bike course.  (I've been there before.)  Sounds like the purple cap was good luck!  Geaux Justin!
