Total Time = 3h 03m 43s
Overall Rank = 2251/4243
Age Group = 25-29
Age Group Rank = 342/543
Pre-race routine:

Rode my bike from Irving Park blvd downtown to Monroe st. to the harbor. Ate a croissant - sat around for a few hours and waited for the sun to come out.
Event warmup:

Just waiting for the sun to come out and listening to my ipod.
Swim
  • 35m 1s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 20s / 100 meters
Comments:

I'm usually a good swimmer, I really am. I usually am able to take the knock arounds and tugs from other swimmers, but this time I got elbowed "on the button" of my jaw by the guy to my left just as I was going to breath on the right and it dazed me for a few minutes, saw stars, dizzy, nautious. Basically after the hit my swim was doomed until I was able to find my groove. Eventually I did but I was about 5 minutes behind where I should have been.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, getting hit like that is just an unavoidable accident when I start in the front.

Learn to take it like a man. Perhaps join a MMA gym.
Transition 1
  • 04m 9s
Comments:

I had been doing barefoot running training for a month before the race and it helped so much for the long run from the harbor to T1. Felt REALLY almost painless.
What would you do differently?:

not use the garmin at all, it slowed me down and didn't find a satellite until 1/4 the way through the bike. Leave the garmin at home for shorter races.
Bike
  • 1h 17m 57s
  • 25 miles
  • 19.24 mile/hr
Comments:

Great job for me on the bike. I barely noticed the head winds (they didn't nearly compare to the last 19 miles at steelhead). I felt like I was flying on an airplane when we'd turn south. Passing uncountable amounts of people and unfortunately being forced to draft. It was impossible to not be stuck behind some guy while waiting for your turn to pass.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing more I can do but push the hardest gear harder. I did great going into the headwind and up the (teeny) hills.
Transition 2
  • 02m 22s
Comments:

very very fast T2. I forgot to slip my riding shorts off and just wear my tri shorts for the run but it wound up not being an issue. Cycling shorts were not that uncomfortable for the run.
What would you do differently?:

Remember to take the cycling shorts off.
Run
  • 1h 04m 11s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 10m 20s  min/mile
Comments:

i'm not a strong runner. I need to get stronger. I also should have grabbed more gu's from the guy handing them out because on the return trip nobody had any more.
What would you do differently?:

eat more going into the run. By the end I started to feel like I needed something to keep going. Nutrition failure.
Post race
Warm down:

walk with my wife to pack up my transition area. To whoever stole my toilet paper: Thanks for not stealing anything else - hope you were able to poop in time.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

my own physical fitness

Great job, sorry you took one on the chin like that, it really throws you for a loop.  That's the interesting thing about what we do - adversity is in every race and you never know what it'll be like.  Great job charging through.

Nice job.  Sorry about taking one in the chin.  I live right off of Irving Park as well.

Congratulations and great job on surviving the swim! Nice bike split too, it was a real fun going south and jumping on those bumps!
