Total Time = 12h 44m 31s
Overall Rank = 1170/2435
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 0/285
Pre-race routine:

Woke 3:45 am. had two packs oatmeal and two whole wheat mini bagels.
Met Paul in lobby and walk 3/4 mile to transition area to check bike and drop off special needs bag. Walked another 3/4 mile to swim start. Line was a mile long. Waited for start of race. I am glad I wore sweats, was a little chilly. Took 25 minutes for us to get to water once race started.
Event warmup:

Walking. Not allowed in water prior to start.
Swim
  • 1h 48m 15s
  • 4224 yards
  • 02m 34s / 100 yards
Comments:

Really not a good thing, started out OK , just kept getting worse.I swim and go nowhere. Not sure what the problem was. Swam inside closest to buoy's the whole race. Probably swam 2.9 miles.
What would you do differently?:

Need more lessons, going to take them.
Transition 1
  • 08m 13s
Comments:

Changed completely out of wet stuff into riding gear. Restroom stop.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, was glad I switched to riding gear.
Bike
  • 6h 13m 49s
  • 112 miles
  • 17.98 mile/hr
Comments:

My pre race goal was 18 MPH average, Hit it. Did not have garmin set up correctly, had no cadence or avg speed. Used someone else's Garmin. Started out slow and kept building. Felt really good. Drank three bottles infinite. 600 calories per. Tried to drink infinite on 20 min intervals and GU at the top of the hour. Stopped at special needs area for third bottle of infinite, worked out well , quick stop. Ate fig newton at 80 mile mark, too dry to eat. Last 25 miles passed a ton of people. Close call at lap 105, car pulled out in front of me on downhill, slammed on breaks and don't know how I did not wreck. Tried to pedal high cadence last few miles of flat into T2.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure, seems I did just right, Work on speed in off season.
Transition 2
  • 08m 41s
Comments:

Felt sore and stiff getting off bike. The catcher took bike and I ran 200 yds to bag and tent. Changed into running clothes. Used rest room.
What would you do differently?:

need to learn to leave shoes on bike.
Run
  • 4h 25m 33s
  • 26.2 miles
  • 10m 08s  min/mile
Comments:

Always feel like I am dehydrated and bloated. Feel like I need to drink and feel like blaaa when I do. Mixed it up all day. Bet I gained weight Drank water,Gatorade, broth, coke. Ate banana, orange and grapes. Felt good till eighteen or so. Was running from aid station to aid station, at 19.5 hit a wall, used restroom and walked quarter mile. Kept getting sharp cramps under right rib cage. Never had them before, not sure of cause, would get them shortly after aid stations. Used sponges every station, great stuff, except soaked shoes and socks. Happy with over all job. Move up a lot in standings. Goal was to run whole way, happy with it.
What would you do differently?:

Need to figure out run nutrition better. Need more long miles for next one.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked 1/2 mile to hotel with parents and showered. Then walked 3/4 to transition and back with bike and gear. Went back to finish line to watch the end of the race. Truly an amazing thing watching the end of the journey for others.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Swimming, swimming, swimming

Event comments:

The Iron man organization and Louisville put on a great event. Highly recommend it. City is really family friendly.

Guessing I finished in 115 area for age group, only listing top 100

Awesome! I love it!  What an amazing run after a super speedy bike!  Very cool that you went down for the finish...we tried hard, but ended up passing out after a big dinner.

So proud of you!

Congrats dude.  You did an outstanding job.  Scary thing about the bike - says alot about your conditioning that you had good enough reflexes and situational awareness to avoid that wreck -  I'm sure it would have left a mark   Great job Ironman!!!

Congratulations Dave!  You had a fantastic race. I can't wait to see Steve cross the finish at B2B. You know you could just keep your training up for a couple more months and come to NC with us and do it again
