presta question

Pro  3906     Libertyville, IL |  Subject: presta questioni was told by the lbs that riding without the nut on the presta valve is ok. basically snapped it off a tube working with a disc, still holds air just no nut. Anyone ridden with this issue and found it not to be anything to worry about? i would trash the tube but i would have to order another latex one but will or just go butyl if there is risk. thanks! |

Champion 5117 Brandon, MS | Subject: RE: presta question The nut or the valve cap? The nut just makes it easy to air up a new tire. The valve cap just keeps the stem from poking the tube when it's in the box. When your inflated tire is on your wheel, they serve no purpose or function. |

So, really, if there was a clearance issue filling the tube with a disc wheel, one could remove that valve and take a pliers to cut it down if needed? Champion 5117 Brandon, MS | Subject: RE: presta question Well they help protect the stem which is held in the plastic cap which protects the tube. Chunk your plastic caps, the really serve no purpose. Should have been more clear there. They also keep the inner valve from falling down, but when you're tire is inflated, it's served it's purpose. I wouldn't go ripping it off all my tubes, but as long as you keep a tire aired up, you don't need it. It may leak air faster as the pressure drops, but I've never noticed it on my rides. | 71 | Subject: RE: presta question Plastic cap: worthless once out of the box. Metal ring: helpful for inflating a very under-inflated or new tube, especially with a short stem, but not necessary. Small screw on the valve: prevents air from leaking if you accidentally hit the valve end-on. It's good practice to keep this closed, but I've certainly known people that never close it, and never have an issue. I've forgotten it many times, and never had a problem. If you use valve extenders, you don't use this screw anyway. Short answer: as long as the air is currently staying in the tube, then you're fine. |
