Hey All..
Slowly settling into life & school here in North Vancouver..
Looking for 1 or 2 people to get out and cycle with as I'm new to the area... as well as to riding a "road bike"
Planning to join North Shore Tri Club for next season!!

Cheers,
 jr

I'm riding today! I'll probably go to Horseshoe Bay and back if anyone wants to join me.

Wondering about cycling in the Lower Seymour Dam Conversation Reserve... demonstration forest, etc... Anyone cycle there? Is it the road with all the speed bumps.. that starts at the top end of CAPILANO University campus? Or is there another road ?

I've cycled there a few times and it's pretty nice, but the turns are tight. One of the regular riders at our velodrome died there after a rollerblader coming the opposite direction crossed the center line and crashed into him, so you've got to be really careful there.

learned to ride there and lived pretty close to there. I wish that she still did.

There are speed bumps installed on the road leading up to the conservation area at Seymour Dam Road. If you want to avoid the speed bumps there is a large parking area further up near the entry gate into the reserve.
The road itself is nicely paved and about 19 km out and back. It is a great place to learn if you are new to road cycling. Road is closed to traffic and has some hills, curves, downhill sections and flat straight sections, all good things for honing your cycling skills.
People using the road are all super friendly and you'll see lots of families on the weekends during the summer months.

Enjoy!

Riel

Thanks for the feedback...
Been playing around with "Map My Ride" on the computer...
Generated the following... about 22-25km round trip...
Wondering what the traffic would be like? How cyclist friendly are some of these streets?
Again.. welcoming any insights...

Capilano Rd south to Welch..
Welch to First (going East)
East on First to Second... then 3rd...
Stay on 3rd till it becomes Cotton Rd...
Stay on Cotton until it becomes Main...
Remain on Main till it becomes the Dollarton Hwy...

Is Dollarton Hwy cyclist friendly?

The 22-24k round trip is based on turning around at start of the Dollarton Hwy

Thanks again..
Really do need to get out and ride..

Hah! I hate the ride to Deep Cove, so given the choice, I always ride out to Horseshoe Bay/West Van than Deep Cove/North Van. This explains why I have never ridden up Seymour, but I've ridden up Cypress alot.

I just don't like the traffic on the route to Deep Cove.

Leah, let's go for a ride and include a Honey's stop.

PS- The new season at the velodrome is here too.

I wasn't planning on going to the track on Fridays until racing started, but I could be convinced otherwise.

For anyone else, there are some Learn To Ride classes coming up at the track.

Learn to ride sounds like a great idea...

Since buying my lil road bike... I've come to the conclusion that whoever coined the phrase.. "it's as easy as riding a bike"... was definitely not trying to learn road biking... in an area with lots of traffic, hills & potholes... and that doesn't even get into the clipless clip shoe topic

Would love more info...

LOL ... I just had my first fall-over-in-the-bike last weekend. It wasn't as bad as I was dreading since going clipless ... a skinned knee and elbow, and a considerably wounded dignity and injured pride. Fellah in the car who was stopped behind me at the light (OK I wasn't even moving ... big gust of wind, bad decision NOT to take my foot out soon enough, terrible combination, and yes, I bounce at least TWICE from that height) leapt out to help ... but I love love love the road bike. AND I love love love the clipless pedals. :-)

Here's the information for the Learn To Ride program at the track.

http://www.burnabyvelodrome.ca/learntoride.html

It's a pretty good deal. It comes with a rental bike and it's a lot of fun. If anyone is going, let me know and I'll be sure to say hi.
