So i have a question regarding a swimming workouts timing.  say for example i have a workout that is supposed to be 22 min long.  should that time include my warm up?  is this time supposed to be spent only swimming or is it time in the pool total, that is including resting time also?  Thanks for the help guys and gals.

I have always included the warm up, and the rest time. I guess I have never thought of the warm up or the cool down as a separate part of the workout. How much rest do you plan on doing? I would just include it unless it's going to be a lot of rest then the choice is up to you.

I would guess that the 22 minutes includes rest time as well. I find it extremely odd that you would have a swimming workout assigned by time, every swim workout I've ever done was distance based, with separate sections for warmups/cooldowns and specific set/rest intervals.

I would think if it is a timed swim, you should be swimming for that amount of time at some kind of pace

I include rests with the time, but tack on a 10 minute warm up and a 10 minute cool down in addition to that time.

Well, how do *you* feel about a 22 min swim?

If you think it's easy, then include only your actual swim time. Don't count your warm up, cool down or rest time. (Thereby giving you 22 min of "actual workout time.")

If you think it's hard, then include your warm up/cool down time.

If you think it's *really* hard, then include your warm up/cool down and rest periods.

Or, play around with what's "included," until you feel you've gotten a decent workout. And then build your endurance from there.

JMO, and it's worth all that you paid for it. LOL

I agree with TDK, I have never really done a swim workout by time, well maybe three hours or so, but mostly by yardage, or by specific workout.

I usually do 1000 meter IM (10 x 100 IM all 4 strokes for newbies, 25 meters x fly, back, breast, free) warm up while increasing speed each 100
1000 meters kick (all 4 strokes)
1000 meter pull (all 4 strokes)
1000 meter swim (all 4 strokes)

But then I love swimming........hate running

I got the training plan from trinewbies.com BEFORE I found this sight.  I guess pushing a button on my watch is easier to me than it is to count laps in my head while in the pool or the track. that is the main reason why i havent changed my routine plan.

A lot of the free programs on this site have a time rather than distance as the scheduled workout. When I started training last year at this time, I would include warm-up and cool-down in my times, but now I've been training for a year, I don't. Much like my runs, I use the time as my main set, and add extra time on for warm-up/cool-down. However, I do include my rests in the time. Like if I'm doing sprints with rests in-between.
