Overall Rank = /
Age Group = Male 35-39
Age Group Rank = 3/23
Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:30, quick bagel and cup of coffee
Event warmup:

Set up transition, made sure my bags were in the T1 and T2 bins. Waited for the rain to stop and the race to finally start
Swim
  • 1h 04m 55s
  • 4224 yards
  • 01m 32s / 100 yards
Comments:

finally cleared out after the first turn. Felt really good.
Transition 1
  • 03m 50s
Comments:

wetsuit strippers were great, went to changing tent, got bike stuff on and off on the course-IN THE RAIN!!
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Bike
  • 5h 59m 55s
  • 112 miles
  • 18.67 mile/hr
Comments:

overall- bike went as planned. Thought I could get 6 hours- just about perfect
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Transition 2
  • 07m 16s
Comments:

This was terrible. I get into transition and rack my bike. I run to the changing tent and tell them my number so I can have my T2 bag. I am told it is not there. The guy looks around for a minute while I take off some of my bike stuff. He can't find it. I end up looking through about half the bags to finally find my bag. It had my stuff on it, but a different sticker on it. I lost several minutes here and got a little rattled.
What would you do differently?:

hope my T2 bag does not get lost
Run
  • 4h 52m 5s
  • 26.2 miles
  • 11m 09s  min/mile
Comments:

Overall it was fine. Many spots were flooded-so I ended up with wet feet pretty early on. Lap 1 felt good, lap 2 ok, lap 3 hurting a little, lap 4 I could not eat or drink anything but water. I needed fuel but could not take in anything. Made me slow a ton, but overall- did the marathon in under 5 and that was my other goal.
What would you do differently?:

Sunscreen! With the rain at the start of the race I did not think about sunscreen. Ended up with a sunburn, but you live and learn.
Post race
Warm down:

walked around- had a coke and talked with some family and friends that came out to the race. Went to Chipotle on the way to the hotel and sucked a burritto and chips down. Took a shower and went to sleep.

Event comments:

Weather was not great, but seemed like they did the best they could to still get the race off.

Nice job and congrats on the 3rd place finish in your AG!  You smoked that swim!

yes, the transition gear at the tent was a little frustrating.  I had a problem getting my stuff as well.  If I had to do this part over again I would have used a sharpie and marked all my bags!  can't think of everything your first time around though.  Surprisingly I have a bit of sunburn too (even though I never did see the sun).

Hey great race in those crappy conditions. You guys doing the full were awesome! I came back about midnight to help my friend get all her wetsuits (she owns the rental company) back to the hotel for cleaning and people were starting another loop. Rumor is some guy was out there 'til 3 a.m.!!! Amazing.

Nice work out there!

Awesome man, just like you planned it. I'm especially impressed with your swim pace! I'd have been fearful of doing the run with wet feet, glad it didn't seem to cause you too many problems.

Hope to see you sometime soon and hear the story in person.

looks like I am now 4th in my AG.  I was given a drafting penalty for "entering within 2 bike lengths for 5 seconds and then backing out"  4:00 time added- so now 4th.

Bummer... I hope they weren't being overall picky about stuff like that given the bike conditions. So many places where water and/or potholes caused people to veer off their path, etc. Compared to IM FL (aka DraftFest), it seemed to me that people were being pretty good about drafting. Congratulations on a great race, regardless of the end placement!
