Pre-race routine:

well the morning started off good with a 4 am wake up call. got up and put some shorts on then went out to ryans kitchen and made some oatmeal. Read the latest copy of LL BEAN and ate away. 1.5 cups later... time to stretch. got the race gear on and met ryan at the car to head to the lake. Once we got there I pumped up the tiers and set out everything in transition. Then the rain came. It was coming down good and decided to put the wetsuit on to keep me warm, after all it was still dark and only around 65-70 degrease. The national anthem was sang and then the voice on the PA said that there would be a delay due to rain... I found Ryan and eventually we went in to the FCA RV to stay warm and dry. Played with his training buddies friends that was doing the full Ironman. Kids were great and showing us their swim strokes (ryan is the IronKids tri coach in OKC.) voice on PA said that there would be a mandatory dismount at mile 6 because of the impassable roads... hey at least were racing! I was not about to do a Swim run swim DU-athlon.
Event warmup:

Went back to Transition and checked everything to make sure it was still there. WHERE DID MY $2.59 Roctain go? crap... good thing ryan had some hammer gu, shot gunned that and did some arm circles and light stretches... done.. easy... waded in to the water and it looks like it was time to get going.

Comments:

Swim was good. I couldnt really find anyone to pace with or sight off of but as long as there were people on my right and left I was good. I did end up starting on the right side and half way through the first 800 I was right next to the buies.
What would you do differently?:

I could defiantly have worked harder on my swimming this season but my run needed a lot of improvement and I love biking so both of those got a lot better. and sighting could have used a little work too.

What would you do differently?:

as I was running up the ramp i dropped my goggles on the ramp and had to go back there and grab em... then I saw the wet suit strippers, WOW there amazing! I unzipped and had the top off already, laid down bang it was off! grabbed the suit and ran to my bike. through the suit on the ground. sunglasses on helmet on, bike off rack run to bike exit.

Comments:

Jumped on the bike good got the shoes in place and started out on to the bike course. there was a good 3 miles on the first segment that went along the damn of the lake and was flat and fast! During this time there was some good rain coming down that would last to around mile 16. During this time there were a few KCM people that we kept inline with and tried pacing off of. There was also about a pack of about 10 guys that kept going up and down with in the pack depending on what the course was. because of this there was water flying all around us coming up off the tires. I finally got fed up with a bunch of them and tried to break off from the group. they ended up catching up to me around 3 min later. o well, felt good to know I could break off.

once we hit the turn spot I slowed down a little to make sure that I didn't wipe out on the wet pavement. once the rain stopped the group broke up a little bit and I was happy to be maintaining around 22-25 mph depending on the incline -decline. As I approached the 28 mile turn around I counted all of the bikers that were ahead of me on their way back in... the first was 7 mile ahead of me... DAM... when I got to the turn around I was 51st... not bad for a Clide.

the next 14 miles were a blur and just hammered out my pace and kept around 20-22.. it was a little more up hill. still feeling strong!

there were 3 of us that got to the right turn to hit the last 14 miles of the course. the other 2 broke out a little and i let them be. during this segment it was up hill most of the way and I was struggling the first 7ish of the miles to keep at around 17-20 mph. I decided that I needed to eat again and had a bar. once I got the food in me i felt great and got back up to 23-24 on the dam the last 3 miles back in. I saw Riley on the dam and could tell that he had had a good bike cause he was ahead of me but also struggling a little. Got to the transition and hopped off the bike

Nutrition 2 power bars 1 gu 2 Gatorade water bottles 20 oz each and 4/5 of a water bottle of water
What would you do differently?:

I would have eaten the Power bar earlier in the bike.. But I was also thinking that I didnt want to have to stop on the run to hit a porta pottie like I did in kansas 70.3 ... all in all a good solid bike.

What would you do differently?:

ran in on the BIKE in line and found my rack. took longer then it felt but overall felt good and quick. kept the sunglasses on and left the had behind... as it was still overcast and didn't need to block the sun of the hot black hair.

Comments:

with in the first mile I got passed by a few people including 3 girls. Borthwick flew buy me as I yelled keep up the pace... Im commin' after you!!! Knowing that he was way to fast finishing 21st overall... My goal was to hit 8:00 miles or faster. as the first 3 miles came and went I knew that this was going to be a good race! and as the next 3 I knew that If i kept this pace up I would do better on the run then I had hoped. at the beginning of mile 6 it was still raining and decided to stop for a second to urinate. then hit the road running. at the turn around section there was a huge group of people yelling GO DREW... Who are these people... o there cheering for the 17 year old that had caught up to me on the first 6 miles of the run... dam skinny runners

I ran next to him for a second to ask him his name and to his pace he said 7:30's-7:45's I told him that even though he was an MU kid I would still pace with him because we shared the same name. he would run in front and then I would keeping about the same pace for as long as we could before the other would overtake. some where with in the first 2 miles of this he said he was getting tired, I told him that I dont give a dam what you feel were keeping this pace... and then we did. for the next 4 miles of the run still swapping positions. at mile 11 marker I needed to pee again so i let drew go and figured that I could pick up the ground after my bladder emptied. it turned out to be a good idea because the running felt a lot more comfortable after this.

Mile 11 after the pee. I decided to try to kick it up a little and led for the whole mile. then he took that as a here I come... so he lead for the last mile. with in 100 yards he was ahead by 25 yards or so, so the competitor in me... hit the sprint for the finish. Im going to be interested to see the finish photo... we ended up with the exact same time!

Nutrition. 1/2 a power bar and Gatorades and waters at every other station. didn't get much in me more on me but what ever... it felt good

What would you do differently?:

eat half a bar at mile 3 and then again around 7. I felt good in the run. my fastest yet by far.
Post race
Warm down:

cookies and a cinnamon role then the cramps came in my legs... hobbled in to the med tent and got assistance... even though i didnt get the IV like I had hoped. but started to feel better... well a little... then went and got a massage... NOT A GOOD ONE AT ALL o well

What limited your ability to perform faster:

RAIN ON THE BIKE!!!!!

Event comments:

coming out of the race as the USAT Long Course National Champion for Clydesdale's was what I was hoping for the last month heading up to the race. Being able to accomplish this made me feel great! I just wish that WTC had Tri Slots for Clearwater and KONA cause I KNOW THAT WOULD BE MY NEXT GOAL!

Course: 14 miles North, 14 Miles West, 14 miles East, 14 miles North. The roads were 50% nice smooth black top and the other 50 were pot holed, chip and seal, cracked and overall not very good roads. Because of all the rain there was a 50 yard area that was under 4-6" of water and we had to have a mandatory dismount. Luckily on the way back in the water was gone. FLAT FLAT FAST AND FLAT - always peddling and hardly any rest time shooting down hills like i was able to do in Kansas. I love going down hills no likey going up the big ones. FLAT AND FAST IS FUN just wish it wasnt raining or i think i could have knocked off 5 or so minutes.... at least thats what I would like to think :)

Course: 3.275 miles out, 3.275 miles back x2. The run corse was FLAT and when I mean that there was only 15 feet of elevation change on each segment... maybe not even that much. Because of all the rain there were parts of the running trail that were under water and it felt good when you splashed down in them. (good thing i went with the zoots and not the Nimbus). overall there was a lot of water every where through out the day

You'd be a lot faster if you didn't have to pee so much. Just sayin...
