Kennebunk Beach Triathlon Club

Sunny
Total Time = 1h 39m 27s
Overall Rank = 182/251
Age Group = M2529
Age Group Rank = 16/18
Pre-race routine:

Had a bagel with peanut butter, a coffee, and drank a few bottles of water.
Event warmup:

Got there very early to get a good parking spot and not have to take the shuttle. Set up my transition area then hung out on the beach in shock that I was about to do a triathlon. Started stretching at about 10:05 and got a good stretch in.
Swim
  • 09m 13s
  • 450 yards
  • 02m 03s / 100 yards
Comments:

Was going well when I first got into the water, but I have a tendency to spit water out as I breath in, and since it was salt water that was not good. Unfortunately I never got into my normal stroke as I didn't want to suck in anymore water. So I swam 300 yards with my head out. Arms and legs were going well but with the head out form was poor. Overall I was happy, since it was my first one.
What would you do differently?:

Need to learn how to not let water in while breathing during my swim. If that is eliminated I could have shaved off at least a minute or 2
Transition 1
  • 01m 55s
Comments:

Got out of T1 pretty well for my 1st time. No socks and right into the sneakers worked and saved time. Next year I will ahve a better fitting suit and won't have a ton of water in the ankles.
What would you do differently?:

Get fitted and buy a wetsuit.
Bike
  • 52m
  • 14.7 miles
  • 16.96 mile/hr
Comments:

Thrilled with my bike as I kept an avg mph higher than I have ever had. Frustrated at first getting passed a lot, but this is my first race and have only been riding for 3 weeks is all I kept saying. Passed a few people and played leap frog with others. That was AWESOME! Just had a blast today.
What would you do differently?:

Get better over time and buy some aerobars!
Transition 2
  • 00m 35s
Comments:

In and out very quick, since I had running shoes on just a quick rack and helmet off.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really, brush feet off in T1 instead of during the run on the course.
Run
  • 35m 47s
  • 3.2 miles
  • 11m 11s  min/mile
Comments:

Get better at running. Although I hadn't ran for 2 weeks because of a sore knee, but finished well. And I set a PR maybe for my next 5k I'll go ride 14 miles before hand.
What would you do differently?:

Just get better at running and find my pace to push myself without killing myself.
Post race
Warm down:

Quick stretch, beer, food, and waters.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Just being new and only training for 4 weeks. I did this to prove to myself I can do it and get a starting time to knock down next year.

Event comments:

Awesome first race. Great people and awesome volunteers! Triathletes are the greatest people!!

Congratulations, Nice Job Triathlete!  I found your number on the registration board and walked by your transition area a few times pre-race to say Hi, your stuff was there but you must have been wandering around too so we didn't connect.  Great day for a race, and I think that particular race is a good one for newer triathletes.  It's a race I'm going to repeat next year for sure.
