Subject: indoor tri - training and kick turns?
Hi,

I just signed up for an indoor 1 hr tri at the local lifetime fitness.
I like the idea of a pool swim and it's only 10 mins, then you get 15 mins (for safety apparently) transition before the bike leg.

I did my training for the sprint I just did just turning, no kick turns.
Can I learn kick turns in 4 weeks and be proficient enough to swim a quick 10 mins like that in the indoor race?

Can you learn kick turns in four weeks... I would hope so.  No idea about you making your time goal, but kick turns should help you cut some time off.

not only will flip turns speed you up in the pool, but nice long streamlines off the wall (underwater glides with kicks after a big push) is faster and more efficient than coming up fast and starting stokes.
The flip turn most likely won't be the hard part, it will be getting used to holding your breath and regulating the oxygen intact so you don't get exhausted. That just takes practice.  So my reco would be start with alternating between flips and open turns each length until you get used to the breathing.  After a couple of weeks, you will be able to reduce the # of open turns.
However, use the wall for all it's worth regardless of flip or open turn, especially for a pool race.

If you are willing to learn, flip turns aren't hard at all.  Just don't get discouraged when you get a bunch of water up your nose.  After a while it just comes naturally.

If you breathe out through your nose when you flip it will prevent you from getting water up your nose.

yes, only do flip turns from now on! although its ok to do an open turn if you need oxygen, but really try to do all flip turns!

Flip turns will make you faster in the pool *if* you learn to do them properly.  However, I have seen lots of people doing bad flip turns that are actually slowing them down.  So if you are going to learn to do them, make sure you are doing it properly.  If possible, have an experienced swimmer or coach take a look at what you are doing to see how it looks.
